Evo Engine removal without removing transmission or Tcase?
Evo Engine removal without removing transmission or Tcase?
I just bought a new to me Evo IX MR and the engine is out of the car but the transmission and transfer case are still in the car. I guess he removed it like you would remove an engine from an automatic transmission. The car still has the Exedy Twin Plate in it and it looks like he removed the bolts from the back of the exedy flywheel that hold the "blocks" that you normally bolt the clutch cover to. The TOB is not even released right now.
Am I missing something? I didn't even know this was possible, and I'm wondering if whoever removed the engine screwed up the twin plate by doing it this way? When I look at the clutch that remains in the transmission the holes are threaded and the flywheel is not, it's more like a dowel rod hole.
Clutch mid plate and basket (one of the discs is out) still in car

Flywheel (transmission side)

Back of flywheel (engine side)

Got it figured out, kind of. Still need to find which bolts connect the Exedy flywheel to the twin plate basket. Got the TOB released and removed the clutch basket. I had to get a third hand to press the clutch assembly and help compress the TOB to release it - took me a minute to figure out why I couldn't get the TOB to release.
Now I just need to identify which 6 bolts attach the clutch basket to the flywheel. Does anyone have a photo of the back of an Exedy Twin plate flywheel with the clutch assembly attached?

So is this procedure safe for the clutch?
i have the same clutch in my car and it would be nice to leave it together when i pull the motor soon since i dont need to mess with the trans/clutch.

I personally would not do it that way. I'm not even sure how you would get it back together without the clutch discs falling out of the basket.

It should be fine... The clutch discs should stay centered because they would still be splined on the input shaft of the trans. The difficulty of doing it this way would be getting the clutch basket holes to line up to the through holes in the flywheel. That and having enough clearance between the frame rail and the trans for the engine to drop in without scratching the crap out of the rail.
