HELP PLEASE - I broke something :(
HELP PLEASE - I broke something :(
So what originally started as a cam housing seal & lifter job has now turned into a possible teardown. Not looking forward to it.
History: Cam housing seal went bad, had a 1 inch chunk missing from it. Could also hear some lifter tick so I decided I'd just do both in 1 go. Replaced lifters & seal & put the car back together. Tried to turn over & it would crank & crank, but would never fire. Changed out the spark plugs then looked online to see about the housing bearing and if the position mattered. Apparently it does, so I stripped the housing plate off, put the car in TDC, and adjusted the bearing. Went to start the car and volia! It started.. for about 2 seconds then made this awful metal on metal squeal & it died. Instantly knew something got messed up. I thought, well screw it - it's already broke let's try and turn it over again. Same effect, minus the startup.
So - anyone have any idea? I thought bent a valve at first, but apparently people can run their cars on a bent valve? Then I thought maybe the piston scraped the wall, but people have ran their car with that. So I really have no clue now. I didn't mess with any of the timing changing out the lifters.

Probably a good idea to pull the valve cover and survey the damage. Next time try rotating the crank with a wrench by hand instead of just cranking the starter some more. That way if somethings binding up you can tell without causing further damage.
Cams & rockers are fine. Bearing in the camshaft sensor housing got chewed up on the guide pins. Apparently it wasn't in there like it was supposed to be. $18.50 fix. Although now I can't turn the crank over manually, which is odd seeing as I could turn it all day long when changing out the lifters. Battery went dead on me before I could try starting it - gonna charge it while I'm at work tomorrow & see if it'll start when I get home.

If you did not install the cam caps currectly (correct position) and already tried to fire it up serveral times you may have damaged the cam caps. I would take them off and check if its damaged and if so have the machine shop re fresh it for you. But the motor not spinning by hand is not good lol You can take off the timing belt and spin the crank by hand to rule out of its a block issue or head issue if you don't see anything wrong visually when the valve cover is off

Sorry, cylinder as STM refers to it.

Or trigger as evomoto refers to it.
Or bearing as I refer to it.
4. a part of a machine that bears friction, especially between a rotating part and its housing.
i.e. a ball bearing.
Tried removing the starter to see if it was seized & possibly causing the failure of rotating the crank. Still no luck with that. Possible something in the transmission causing it to not rotate? Anyone have an idea what could possibly cause that? Kinda feel like I'm looking towards opening up the bottom end and see if the crank is hitting the block.
There isn't any shops around me that I could take it to that has a good rep for evo's.

That part doesn't "bear any friction" or support the cam in any way. That's just the trigger wheel for the cam position sensor. It's just bolted on to the end of the cam.
The crank isn't hitting the block unless you broke the block.

lol well obviously if he's turning the crank and it stops and get stuck then he would not force it anymore which it will not bend the valves. Or he can take off the cams to keep all the valves shut but seems like I misunderstood the problems anyways so what I said doesn't even matter lol
