GSC S3 vs S2. New build

Hi guys.

I've started a (almost)full rebuild. 2.3l 4g64 block, 2l mivec head. The car was originally pushing around 40# with the 6466 gen2 making low to mid 7xxWhp with GSC S3s with a 2l block. I wanna drop the power level to low to mid 5xxWhp (for reliability reasons) and cap the RPMS at 8K. My question is can I keep the S3s or should I go with S2s/different cams?

Thanks!

2.3L, not revving past 8000, go with R2's for sure.

Running that big 6466, I urge you to look into a 2.2SLR motor. 94mm crank, 153mm rods. It will give the advantage of the stroker, but you can also still rev it as high as 9500rpm. You'll have a setup that will spool the turbo only a smidge later, but you'll gain over 1k rpm's up top giving you a much wider powerband. The S3 cams would be a good option for the 2.2slr. The 2.2SLR will also last longer, it has a much better rod/stroke ratio, and lower piston speed per rpm, so bearings, pistons, and rings will last longer.

Hmmm well Kevin(Evo Dynamics) had a 2.4 block on stock bore on the shelf so we're going with that due to time constraints. 100mm OEM crank, 156mm TT rods. I'd like to keep the cap at 8k due to longevity. I'm just concerned the lag will be crazy with the S3s The current valvetrain can't handle 9k+ revs anyway.

So you're building a 2.4. Definitely go with R2's. They have more a lot more lift, and a touch more duration than the S2's. Excellent for stroker motors.

So roughly how much of a change in the mid-range power/loss of top end power when switching from S3s to R2s? Also how will it affect spool time? Keep in mind i'll be going from a 2.0 block to 2.4

You will gain power with R2's over the S3's on a low revving 2.4. The S3's are designed for 9500rpm. The R2's have a little less duration to scale back the rpm ranger, but they have more lift to help better fill the cylinder of your big bore/stroker motor.

I couldn't have said it better myself! ^ Everything that S3 is known for from 6k to 9500rpm, the R2 does from 4k to 8k, they hit harder and spool faster and on a 2.4 it will be whiplash when boost hits. The S3 is a max effort competition race cam for those guys with 67mm or bigger turbos revving to 9500+ trying to squeeze out ever last bit on the track. Their designed to do things that your 2.4 isn't, so the R2 is for you!

I'm replacing my R2's in my 2.2 aluminum rod race engine with S3's and installing my the R2's in my 2.4 for DD and light to light kneck snapping, passenger scaring action!

Wanna make it even more fun? Do what I did and keep your ix transmission for that short gearing insane pull through all the gears! I did that because it's a dd not a race car and my 2.4 will never pass 8k rpm. Not a track car, so much fun!
