oil spark plug

Hi all,

I've got an evo 2 that was misfiring. Upon further investigation I found oil on the plug on cylinder number one. Any ideas on the most likely cause? Head gasket, piston , rings? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Depends, was the oil on the cylinder side or the porcelain side?

Is the car smoking? Is the oil wet or did you find oil ash build up?

Picture?

Thanks a lot for the reply. Unfortunately I didn't think of taking a picture. I literally just bought the car so haven't driven it much at all yet, I was just taking it out for the first time yesterday as it's just meant to be a weekend car . When I test drove the car it was fine but it had a misfire when I drove it yesterday. My mate who knows a lot more than I do found the problem was with cylinder one( the one to the extreme right if you are facing the car). There was oil on the cylinder side. We cleaned it , put it back and test drove it and it was fine but only took it for a short test drive as he though we should try to find out more about why there was oil. He thinks it may be something like the piston ring. Of course I'm hoping it's something less expensive to fix. Any thoughts would be much appreciated . I'll also mention that the engine is meant to be fully forged .

Do valve cover gasket and tube seals first and see if that helps.
Run a compression test aswell, or have a shop do it.

From there you will be able to determine if its a head gasket or piston related.

If oil is on the threads then you're wasting your time doing gasket and seals.

Likewise compression tests are useless at finding broken pistons. If anything, the numbers come up higher than spec.

Compression test is a must with these cars before even thinking about buying them. Hope you find the problem and it's not to bad.

If oil was found on the plugs on the head side then that would suggest internal engine issues. On the flipside oil on the porcelain would suggest an issue with your tube seals aka spark plug hole gasket.

How much oil are we talking? Im curious if you cleaned off the plug if oil got all over it again after putting it back in? Misfire could be for various sources i.e bad plugs bad coil, improper timing injectors etc. Really a ton of things can cause a misfire. But it would be good to know why you're getting oil on the spark plug.

I dont know why a compression test is frowned upon but that might not be a bad idea either if youre still getting oil on the plug. Any shop should be able to perform a compression test for you but better yet I'd recommend you pick up a compression tester and perform the test yourself. Its really very simple.

Thank you for your advice. Ok, today I spoke to the guy who sold me the car. I told him about the problems that I've been having. Maybe you all with more experience can tell me if this makes any sense. He said that what I explained to him has also happened to him in the past. The car is fully forged , 2.3 stroker kit,has bc272 cams, 560 cc injectors,Wabco fuel pump, eagle crank, fpr. He said the car is fuelled aggressively because of the set up and when started if over revved to prevent stalling its very easy to flood the engine. What I saw on the plugs would have been fuel mixed with carbon deposits which could look like oil. Does that sound like it could be a possibility ?

Ive only taken out the car once and didn't drive it for very long because of the problems I had and didn't want to make things worse. I will do a compression test this weekend and report the results.
