12 Plate Rear Diff Noise

So I just had my rear diff upgraded to 12 plates with HD side covers. I got it back yesterday and installed it in my rear subframe, but when I turn the driveshaft flange, it makes a weird noise on the inside. I've heard the 12 plates are noisey until they're broken in. Just want to make sure this is normal, and something wasn't messed up when they upgraded it.

Yeah it'll make noise, you've got 12 new friction discs in there. Follow the break in procedure and report back. But it does have more lock up so presumably you are going to make more noise especially when turning.

I've got a 12plate I'm installing but wont have a chance to drive on until I finish the rest of the build. Let me know how it goes after its broken in.

I've also got BR side mounts and mustache bar so mine will likely be much louder than just a 12 plate in an otherwise streetcar. I wont be running a back seat, sound deadening etc.

Mine is solid mounted in a tubular subframe. Are you able to turn your driveshaft flange? If so do you hear a noise on the inside when you do?

Your hearing the gears meshing, and the bearings being New are set it a right tolerance so they can make a bit of noise. Put fluid in it and go drive it.

Mine is silent. I responded to someone with the same issue. He had a video where you could hear chatter as he turned the lsd on the driveshaft side.

I replied with a video of mine which is silent. But I do expect it'll be noisey in a conventional sense once installed. The noise his made didnt sound normal though.

Keep in mind that fluid also plays a huge role in what sort of noises those rear ends will make. My original TRE diff started its like sorta clunky and then after being broken in was way quieter. Then after a couple years the thing got wicked loud as in I cant hear myself think loud so I sent it back to Job and be found a failed pinion bearing which apparently is quite rare, figures.

Anyway, he put in a new bearing a couple new seals made it look pretty again and sent it back to me. This time around the car was clunking everywhere. I was convinced it was f'ed up but Jon does amazing work so I was skeptical and figures it needed more miles. It was still very clunky as in obnoxiously clunky and I was chatting with Kyoo about it and he sent me some Mitsu fluid. I was previously using Amsoil 75-110 in it. Well low and behold I put in the Mitus fluid and now its way less clunky. Still has lockup but no longer obnoxious.

What's strange about the whole thing is my previous 12 plate I also used Amsoil fluid but I started off with the 75-90 and then later on transitioned to teh 75-110. So IDK if that had something ot do with it or it Amsoil changed their formula and it has less friction modifiers now or what happened. But I do know that with the Mitsu fluid its much more quiet. and I also know that his diff kicks *** and is one of the best things I've ever done to my car!

Motul and redline are definitely what Jon highly prefers. Or OEM if those two aren't available.

So i sent a video of it to the guys at Shep, and he said it's perfectly normal. Everything else I've read is they clunk, until they are broken in. It'll be awhile before she is on the ground and running, so hopefully that is the case. At least i have proof that the noise was present prior to install.

New gears or gears where the setup has been changed should be broken in for at least 500 miles.

He has a break in sheet for Trans/TC/LSD. Can find them on his website.
