I've asked both my Subie engine builder(HMS), as well as my Evo builder(English Racing)about Synthetic vs Non-Syn as well as Syn Blend, and they all say the same thing, and that is that Synthetic oil is pointless to run on an Engine that is getting flushed every 3k miles. They all Recommend running a 20w50 non-syn with High ZDDP Content (ZINC) for Flat Tappet Cams.
Valvoline VR1 is still my "Go To" but i've noticed a few others lately that have peaked my interest.

Has anyone tried the "Kendall GT-1 Competition 20w50"? It seems to have all the right ingredients, but i've yet heard of anyone running it in a 4G63T.

As far as the Oil Filters, I've yet to find "The Best" Filter to run, besides the size i do know some are better than others. Im not sure ima run a Big Truck sized filter, bcuz my car sits pretty low,
but if you do decide to run a larger filter remember that ur guna need to add more oil. They larger filters hold about a half Qt more.
The Royal Purple filter is S'pose to be one of the best, i guess ill find out cuz thats what im using now.

The Evo doesn't have "Flat Tappet Cams".

I've been using Rotella T6 for My Evos and Subbie, for the past 9yrs or so. Oil analysis always came back great. I only use Wix/Napa filters. All my choices are based on BobTheOilGuy's research/testing and personal experience.
This is for occasional weekend meets, HPDE, and AutoX. I change oil after every one or two HPDE events, depending on conditions.

I agree that buying Synthetic is pointless if you aren't going for max mileage.

I used VR1 when I ran an FP turbo, it seemed to work really well, also.

If your build specs require a 50w oil, your demands may be different than mine, so not sure my opinion helps. LOL

I've had my car for 7 years, got it with 42,000 miles and now have 139,000 miles stock block and turbo with kelford 272 cams.

The car is my daily and used to get used for roll racing and now gets used for HPDE (8200 rpm rev limit) events and I use Mobil 1 0w40 with a purolator pur 1 filter. To this day the car still doesn't consume oil between changes.

Mobil 1 high mileage and OEM filters. 165k, original owner, never had any problems. No oil is being consumed, and everything runs great.

Valvoline VR1 (gray bottle) 20w-50 usually because it’s easier for me to get. Cold winters i run a thinner VR1 10w-30. Paired with a WIX filter

100% not true. Synthetic has more consistent viscosity at temperature extremes (doesn't thicken up as much when cold, doesn't thin out as much when hot), and is much more resistant to thermal break down. It certainly has its advantages.
