EVO4-9 block with VR4 head?

Hi guys,

I currently run a built VR4 2.3 stroker motor. Unfortunately it had a big end bearing destroy itself and now I'm needing to replace/rebuild.

As my exhaust and intake manifold (both custom) are setup for the VR4 head, I'd like to retain that.

Can I run a VR4 head on a EVO1-9 block? Finding VR4 blocks here in Australia is difficult now but EVO blocks are everywhere.

It is setup as a north-south RWD configuration too in case there are any engine mounting issues with the later model blocks?

Any help would be appreciated.

Lummy

If that is a DSM 4G63 then Evo 1-3 blocks will work, but not anything Evo 4 or later.

Can you tell me why? Surely the blocks are similar?

Is it water jackets? Oil galleries?

Something else?

The blocks are dimensionally the same, but they're reversed after Evo 3's. As in the cam gears..etc are on opposite sides of the motor.

Understood.

But if I put a VR4 (DSM) head on a 4-9 block, will it be ok? Are the head studs, water jackets, oil galleries, etc all the same?

Keep in mind this isn't going in an EVO car, so none of the usual fitment issues apply. I need the head to function on the block, the rest I can deal with - provided there are still engine mounting points on the block like there are on the earlier blocks.

If this is any help, the only motor mount on my Evo 8 block is on the timing belt end of the engine. The other three motor mounts are on the transmission.

Those threaded tabs in the middle-lower part of the block is what my engine mounts attach to.

You can make pretty much anything work if you put enough effort into it.

It's not just a simple bolt together job though.
