You won't know until you degree the cams.
They're all different by different amounts.

GSC is really good about machining the cams properly, no need for adjustable gears.

As most people have mentioned, no need for aftermarket cam gears. I have heard of adjustable cam gears needed if the cylinder head or block deck has been resurfaced several times to the point where it starts to effect mechanical timing, but if it's a virgin block and head, there is really no need. Oems are the best option.

Block surfacing only affects cam angles by a max of about 0.5 crank degrees.

It's easy to work out but people keep on repeating lots of crap.

There's always more error in reground cams.

It's not a case of being dead on(no cams ever are apart from factory ones), it's a case of measuring every one and making sure it's dead on and also being able to adjust it to however you want to.
The recommended settings are not always best.

You just said no cams are ever dead on... I've installed more than a few set of Kelfords and GSC's and all were perfect.

Maybe if you're buying/using some junk cams like BC, or some other meh brand, sure. Otheriwse, adjustable gears are not needed. And changing time to change power curve is also an optional thing.

Stevie Wonder's self fitted cams are perfect too.

All you do is verify timing, it's not hard.
