About to purchase a built shortblock and swap my head onto it. My tuner is advising me to switch to billet cams. He says he thinks I will break my current kelford 272s. I’m just curious if you guys think so as well? Unless I suck at searching, I haven’t seen too many people breaking kelford 272s.

That sounds like a great sales pitch to me. You might want something with more lift and duration to help with your goals, but it's not necessary to get billet cams instead of cast.

I believe there was a problem a number of years ago with mivec cams breaking.

The Mivec cams breaking is OLD OLD OLD news. GSC has only recently switched to billet cams due to issues with getting cast cores, and they can manfucature the billets with MUCH tighter tolerances. You only need to buy new cams if you want to go bigger.

Is there a way to tell if you have one of those old cams that can break?

I believe there was, I can't remember if it was a date of manufacture or what. either way, if you purchased them in the last 2-3 years (probably even older than that, it was so long ago) then you're fine.Originally Posted by 2006EvoIXer

Quick question instead of making a new thread...
