engine temps

Hey guys well I been tuning the car 04 evo 8 and after cruising and sitting at idle for like half hour or so temps got up to 219 held there. This was around 7pm here in tampa which should be low 80f temps. At night I went tuning wot and temps were 70f and highest temp I saw was 203. I recently did a headgasket but everything is good. I did all kinds of tests. I have a mishimoto radiator and I know the caps go bad so I put my stock radiator cap back on and same thing. I don't think theres any air in the system because I spent a bit trying to bleed it. Fan turns on. What do you guys suggest? I have a mishimoto radiator fan on there. Maybe I need a better fan?

Get on freeway if you think you fan is weak. If temps drop, then you're correct. If temps stay high, then it's something else. How old is your thermostat?

Temps drop to 185 - 190 on free way. I think I changed the thermostat when I first got the car like 3 years ago.

I'm usually around 180-200(engine oil temp) when driving around town and on the freeway depending the rpms.. I only reach 220 degrees sometimes during autocross courses that make me stay in the upper rpms ranges a lot.

I should have specified. I’m talking about coolant temp.

I think it's your fan isn't moving enough air since freeway is cooler. Check the plastic molding to make sure it is forcing air through radiator as fans are running.

So, mishimoto radiators pretty much suck. My advice is to switch thing out for a CSF 7075. Comes with a legit spal fan, all aluminum and is a "slim" design, as opposed to that thick mishimoto taking up a bunch of room in your engine bay. My car doesn't get over ~210*F water temp on track at ~450whp.

If you don't want to replace the rad, turn the fan duty cycle up in the ROM to get more air moving across the radiator when sitting still. There's two fan duty tables, on is 0-some speed, and the other is for above that speed. Turn it up in the 0-some speed one.

Just curious where you got your source. Are they less effective than oem?

Yes I know the mishimoto fan doesn't move as much air as stock. I couldn't fit the stock fan on the mishimoto radiator. I bought the mishimoto fan which comes with a shroud but I had to pull the shroud off and install the fan alone because it didn't fit with the shroud either. It used to work fine before. Letsgetthisdone, can you explain a bit more about the fan tables? Theres two of them. One says thermos fan duty below 20kph and one says above. Where do I make the changes? Heres a pic.

In the below 20 table, change the 194* slot to 195*, then set everything above 195* and up to 100% duty.

Ok so in the blue column change the 194 to 195 and change everything under (on,off,ac) from 195 and up to 100% ok will do. I didn’t know I could make an aftermarket fan could work at different speeds? or is that the percentage of time it stays on? Sorry just trying to understand.

*it just hit me kph = kilometer per hour...so its saying under 20 kph the fan will work what you set the table to...got it...I was thinking of trying to make the shroud work...maybe cut the corner off that's bothering me...now that I'm thinking about it idk if it was the shroud or the fan mounted on the shroud bothering me...hope its the shroud...

If the fan is wired into the stock fan controller, it's being controlled by that table.

It’s wired into the fan controller. I spliced the wires and soldered it.

damn that CSF 7075 looks like a really nice unit. On topic though OP have you considered attempting to modify your stock fan to fit? I had to do some notching and add a few washers to get mine to clear the stock UICP when I went with a thicker Koyo.

I remember I tried but there was no way. I have a forge wg that would hit it and a 4” intake. I’ll try again and see once I get time. I’ll make something work. Maybe getting the mishimoto shroud to work on the fan may be a good idea. I bought the mishimoto fan with shroud but it wouldn’t fit so just installed fan.
