Tranfer Case whine or Rear diff whine

Apologies if this is not the correct place, if not lmk where to move it!

Took my 03 Evo 8 out for a drive for approx 15 minutes, 10 minutes into the drive i start hearing a pretty loud whine. I assumed it was the transfer case. But the whine went away after maybe 5 minutes. Is it normal for it to just come and go when it iis going bad? Or is this something else, possible rear diff whine? Just trying to figure out what I'm getting myself into when it comes to fixing it.

Thanks!

Drivetrain whine doesn't just come and go. Did you change the speed you were going?

If it helps the OP, when my transfer case was going out it was most noticeable at highway speeds and hard to hear at low speeds. It also sounded like it was coming from behind me. In fact, one of the shops I took it to (who didn't know Evos) said it was the rear differential.

When it was happening I was in a residential street probably going no more than 30mph. It stopped when I pulled into a parking lot and slowed down.

Since then ive been driving like normal. Even do a couple pulls here and there. Still nothing. I’m so confused as to what it was.

My transfer case failed on the dyno. I thought it was the rear diff so I replaced that first. The driveshaft makes it so that you can't tell where the noise is coming from. It ended up being the transfer case. Now I have a spare diff and a spare transfer case I need fixed.

We need videos on how a busted rear diff sounds like so that we can differentiate them.

The rear diff will usually make noise at certain speeds. The tcase will just get louder with speed, and it's def way louder than rear diff.
