Exclamation MAS honeycomb mesh destroyed!

Ok guys my buddy just picked up his Evo from the body shop after waiting about 4 months for it. He ended up getting the Gialla front bumper and c/f hood. The hood has vents on both sides including the center, the vent on the driver's side is positioned right above his Buschur air filter. The other day it began to rain very hard and to protect his filter he wrapped it in some cellophane or something, well he was in a rush the next day and took off with the filter still covered. He got a little way down the road and the car began to sputter and then died. He popped the hood and the Buschur filter had totally collapsed on itself because he had forgotten to remove the plastic. Upon further inspection he realized that the honeycomb mesh in front of the MAS was totally destroyed from the center of the cone filter slamming into it when it collapsed. I haven't seen any of this first hand but take his word that it is trashed. He says that the car is running ok but really rich right now. Is there anywhere that sells that metal honeycomb? He's pretty worried about his car but I told him that I would rally the Evom.net troops and help him out. Thank you in advance for advise.

Same thing happened to me but when installing the intake a bolt got stuck and my friend slipped and nailed the mesh. The best i could do was straighten out the mesh as i could. Ya from what ive heard the car runs rich is the mesh isnt perfect but luckily i got a new mas and i traded my bad one for it. tell you the truth, my car seemed to run better after i got the new one especially at idle. Best of luck.

Yeah I slightly grazed mine when I broke the bolts off from my stock air box but it was just like 3 or 4 and were easily straightened with a nail. I mentioned this to my buddy but he said that all of the center of the honeycomb is totally trashed beyon all repair.

I have heard it is also electrofied as part of the MAF sensor. So I would get it replaced if you ever want it to run right again.

man I'm just going to hate to have to tell him that he needs to get a new MAS or is the proper term MAF, I really hope that there is a fix for his dilema.

You can use a 3mm allen wrench to get the honeycombs back into shape. Just remove the honeycomb from the MAS and insert the wrench from the good side. Slide it through and it will begin to come back into shape. It may not be 100% in the end based on the severity of initial damage, but should get him pretty close

i my self had smashed the metal honey comb. experts from WORKS told me that i had to get a new maf sensor since the metal honey comb creates a vortex that the sensor detects. if simply contouring the honey comb back to what it was the car will not run properly. havent got a new maf sensor and to this day i still have idling problems.

There is someone in the Private For Sale area that has a used MAS for sale. I think he was asking $200 for it. I'm not sure how much they are new but it may be worth it for your buddy if the damage is that bad.

yea i damaged mine also. a bolt to my maf would not come loose and broke the plastic inside my air box so i tried putting a 12mm to hold the bolt from spinning then when it broke free the wrench when through the honeycomb. i tried straingtening it but it was F.U.B.A.R. so i had to be tossed. 3 days later still no problems with any idle or boosting. it actualy seems to be just a little better i got 275miles today on a full tank

In the past I have seen that you can buy honeycomb aluminum like that from "somewhere" in big sheets. I'd ask around on www.dsmtalk.com and www.dsmtuners.com . Has to be cheaper than buying a new MAF.

I would think you would have to be real carefull if you tried the above approach. Its doing more than just looking pretty, its part of a measuring instrument. I'm no expert on the subject but I would think you would want the same cell size, wall thickness, sheet thickness, maybe even the same grade aluminum. Just my .02

straighten the airflow

the mesh is just used to 'straighten' the airflow, the actual 'vortex' is made with another element downstream.

I'd try straightening it for now, and then try to procure some AL mesh, or some mesh that works. As long as the holes are about the same size, you should be ok...

Good Luck,

jcnel.
