Advice needed pulling head

Hey guys, I wanted to you guys input. Some of you may have been in this situation and I’d like to hear your story.....

Ok, I’m about ready to put my gsc s2 cams (gsc springs/retainers also) and fp black turbo on... I went to a shop for a quote a while back when I needed some other things done as well and I keep goin over that estimate (fic 1650cc injectors and 450 walbro fuel pump. Already on the car now) .. they want to pull my head off and send it to the machine shop before installing the cams, which I’ve read many places like to do and I’m fine with that. But The thing that I’m stuck on is I feel like they are over charging me on the labor. They are charging 9-10 hours on pulling and installing the head and 4 hours to pull and replace turbo....

whats not clicking for me is I’m sure you already have to pull the turbo and mani off during the head removal correct?

so at this moment and time I was told I was leaking coolant the last time I was at the track about 3 weeks ago. Looks to be coming from the water pump.

So this is what im looking at doing now

im going to have the head sent to the machine shop to be refreshed, port and polished (might as well since it’s already there right).
while the head is off i want the shop to replace the water pump/ timing kit (not sure time or labor involved for this)
and I’ll be putting a brand new fp black turbo and mani when it’s time to go back together...

am I wrong to think that they are over charging me?

The timing job is probably included in the R&R quote on the head.

Turbo install is not part of head removal. You can leave the turbo in the car supported by the exhaust and the lines no problem. The 9-10 hours for the head work is about right. You really don't need any port work done to the head unless you're shooting for over 800whp so I'd probably forgo that. Just make sure the deck is true and if you don't have good headstuds you'll need some. If the water pump is leaking then it's time for a new one.

10hrs for R&I on the head is appropriate. 4hrs extras for the turbo is maybe a smidge high, but only because the coolant is already drained. Otherwise the turbo stays in the car when the head comes off.

Timing belt components like the idler and tensioner pulley, and hydraulic tensioner are not included with pulling the head, and would be extra. They could toss a new belt on, but the rest of it isn't coming off.
