Kaj man that sucks that the Weir kit messed up on you, but thanks for posting so others can see. This maxlock kit and the English Racing ACD tune were going to be my next mods...but now idk?!?!?! So does TRE not recommend the "Weir" max lock kit or is that the same kit they use for the optional 12 plate upgrade?
I agree that the forums are a lil dead but the info here is GOLD, when first researching the evo to purchase this site was the first place I started to read, read, read. Now that I'm at the tail end of evo's heyday I can easily search what worked and what didn't for the platform. I don't even bother with social media exactly for the reason you mentioned above haha.
Would you recommend the Weir kit if I had it professionally installed say by like RRE? Or is it because the plates don't have those ridges/ grooves it's kinda an engineering flaw?
That works REALLY well. I only swapped mine out because I had 130k miles and thought I was upgrading.
I'm just about to hit 130k also haha, I'm going to be following very closely once you get the diff back from TRE to see how much you like it and just overall experience with it. Most likely going to be slowing saving to eventually send the big 3 out to TRE to service.

I hear TRE's build is "just right" in terms of amount of lock, preload, etc. We'll see. I was happy with the oem restack, a little more aggression would be okay.
If I remember right, a local rally workshop installs Ralliart lsd plates in the rear diff. And somehow I remember that they replace as many plates as needed for the locking force needed. I could ask about this if someone is interested in.
On the bright side, I got the diff back yesterday, so ran it to the garage and tossed it in. It's quieter (OEM had a bit of a whine, after adding poly bushings) and makes zero noise during full steering lock u-turns, which surprised me.
It sure is clean and pretty. I really like that he puts in new bolts. Dirty, old ones are always a pet peeve of mine I'm tempted to buy myself a solvent tank. Aaaanyway....
I was a bit concerned because the box was a bit beat and I could feel the diff rolling around inside. Anyone remember the shortblock I ordered? LOL. So, I opened it up and it was pretty much all in one piece, so I was relieved. It definitely had a rough trip. Having worked at UPS, I'm not surprised. The bag it was in had torn and foam packing material was inside the diff. I blew out what I could, but assume it won't harm anything until I do the 500mi fluid swap.
It ended up with the billet side cover (both my OEM covers were toast):
... and the addition of the sight glass to the rear cover (I left it because I felt bad that he'd have to disassemble everything, plus it saves me a couple paper towels during fill up). It ended up being twice the original quote, but then again, my transmission did, also (different vendor); it is what it is. I can't wait to see what kind of shenanigans the t-case turns out to provide The only "negative" to the differential is the fill plug is now tucked up near the mustache bar (the next thing to go). Depending on what type of pump you use to fill, this may not be a big deal (mine has a fitting on the end that took some work to get in and out). Also, I didn't have a 24mm box-end wrench, so I had to use a large Crecent to "torque" the fill plug. Using those always makes me nervous, though LOL.
All-in-all, I'm impressed with the assembly and can't wait to try out the actual "good stuff".
TLDR: Packaging concerned me, given past experience with shipping companies. Turned out well. Diff looks great. Nice attention to detail. Send your stuff to TRE. Runs quiet.
