How to properly prep blocks surface

Took my head out to get machined and build then I'll be putting a new gasket on along with ARP.

Wondering what the proper way to prep the block. So far what ive done is i used a sharp blade to get the left over old gasket off the block. I dont think this is enough to get the head fully sealed. Any advice?

Thanks!

Get a metal flat edge and check all angles of your block surface with feeler gauge. I forget what the tolerance is but I think it's in the service manual.

Scotch brite lightly, and send it. It'll seal fine. Just make sure it's smooth and clean.

Checking flatness is about pointless unless you really plan to remove it and tear it down to get the surface machined if it's slightly out of spec. Especially since your reason for tear down wasn't a blow head gasket, I'm sure it's fine.

Might want to reconsider scotch brite.

Hmm, I've never had an issue, but I use the kitchen pads from the grocery store, and like I said, "lightly". After reading a bunch on it though, I will certainly be rethinking that approach. Thanks.

I was able to find head gasket pieces that looked like it was part of the block with a flat edge. I just ran razor blade over it and a tiny chunk came off with each bump on straight edge. I couldn't tell it was part of head gasket otherwise.
