Need turbo suggestions

Hey all, I've got a Evo IX MR that includes some mods and is putting out ~350whp. It still has the original factory turbo, which is failing (suddenly making a lot of noise and leaking oil). I would like to get the turbo replaced with another stock one, but the OEM unit costs a pretty penny. Could anyone suggest a good alternative? I am mainly interested in something that isn't as expensive as an OEM unit and has as-fast or faster spool up. I think with my power levels, pretty much any turbo will handle the airflow. Thanks for any suggestions!

FP Green is solid. little pricey but would spool nicely and get ya a bit more power. if you plan to bump up a bit I had a red on an VIII with some cams and really enjoyed it.

I'm actually going to be parting ways with my FP green to bump up to a red or black. The Green spools almost instantly but I also have a 2.3L. Most would agree that on a 2.0L, its not much slower spooling than a stock evo 9 turbo.

PM me if you are interested. I will be selling the turbo, STM vent to atmosphere downpipe, Hi-Z FIC1200's, and JDC COP kit

71hta from FP will fit the bill nicely.

Or just get your stocker rebuilt.

Do you realize that with faster spoolup, you will likely give up top end power? The stock IX turbo spools fast already, so most people are willing to give up a little spool for 50-100whp. And realize that you will need a tune with a new non-stock IX turbo.

Wish I could do that, but this is my only car and I need something to drive while it’s being rebuilt

My thinking was that at 350whp, the reduction in power from any flow restriction from the turbo will be unnoticeable, but I would really notice an improvement in spool up

going smaller than the 9 turbo is pointless. On 2.0L you can already make it surge, the engine can't consume the air much earlier.

I went with the new FP green earlier this year thinking the same but i still missed my earlier stock spool, so i sold it and got a evo 9 turbo rebuilt with billet turbines, my second choice would have been the 71HTA.

If you don't alreasy havevthese, a test pipe and aftermarket O2 housing will definitely help your spool. Other than that, I can only think of polishing all your exhaust ports, but this is too much work for minimal gains.

And again, depending on how aggressive your current tune is, any change should get retuned to be safe.

If you want your stock turbo rebuilt, send it to me. I'll hook you up.

How much power did you make with this billet 20G TD05?

Thanks everyone for this really enlightening discussion! After reading over the comments and looking over the FP website, I’m leaning toward the FP71HTA. It sounds like the closest thing to stock that is brand new and at $1k, is only 1/3 what the dealer is charging for the OEM unit

Is it new, yes and no. Yes, the compressor housing, CHRA, and turbine wheel are new, but you will need to reuse your old turbine housing. Not a big deal but your turbine housing could have cracks in it if you don't know the history of your car.

The 71hta would be great. Occasionally a used (but good condition) oem 9 turbo will pop up in the for sale section for cheap too. Another way to slightly improve spool would be to change your mivec map to the jdm rs mivec map in the ecu

I should be removing my 71hta soon (I'll be running an EF2.5 instead). I should have my 71hta refreshed with new bearings and for sale next month. I just checked my 71hta for play and it's the same as when I bought it 2 years ago from FP. And yes, I have been running FP's oil feed line from oil filter housing with their red filter.
