surprised in who?

I know Id need springs with JUn 264's.... I figured with HKS 272/272 I should.... I dont know about the 264/272 combo.....

As for the gears...I just want to be able to smooth out the idle here and there and see if the -4/-1 settings work...

$200 is just the beginning. Then you either need to remove the head and take it to a shop, which means installing a new headgasket or hope that you can find a shop that has the $200 tool to remove the retainers while the head is on the engine block. Or you can buy the $200 tool yourself and do it. But you need an air compressor to keep the valves up in the head. Careful you don't drop a valve down into the engine! Pretty much every head gasket job is a bit of a gamble.

I'm running an HKS 272 exhaust cam on my DSM right now. Zero issues. I know people who have run HKS 272s (I and E) on DSMs for years with the stock valve springs, even running up to 8500RPM. Valve float has never been an issue.

I can't speak for other cam brands, of course.

In my opinion, leave well enough alone.

I discussed replacing them with Buschur when then installed my cams and they said it was not needed. I was all ready to pay them the money to do it but David told me that it was not necesary and to keep my money.

Now when cams like the 272's are in, are head bolts even recommended?

Now I'm really confused... David was the person who says the Evo springs are weaker than the OE DSMs.

I'm aware of what is entailed in replacing the valve train. There are a few "shad tree mechanic's" tricks though, for the "home install", that can circumvent the need for those expensive tools and removing the head. However, like ShapeGSX said, the novice can screw this up real bad, real quick...

You can use both 272 intake and exhaust with the stock springs and retainers...

A friend's EVO with just exhaust, SAFC, and boost control.. Has the HKS 272's and cam gears, dyno'd at 336 to the wheels... On a really swealtering day... Not bad.. This was also done with the stock fuel pump, injectors, and turbo.. Perfect idle, and 12.1 A/F ratio's...

shahul,

It was for any HKS cam combo. 264/264, 272, 272, or 264, 272. They told me it was not necessary.

WannaRace,

They did recommend new headbolts with my cams and I did get them.

I looked but could not find my e-mail from David where we discussed the valve springs, retainers etc. The more I try and remember though, I think he said they are fine as long as you keep the RPM's below 7800.

Now I am thinking of having mine changed as my rev limiter was reset to 8500. I think I may call David and ask him.
