also, i believe the reason you don't need a new valvetrain with the hks is b/c they are only 10.8I and 10.2E. All the other aftermarket cams (which require a new valvetrain) are at least 11.2I and 10.8E, and the Piper race cams are 12.0I and 12.0E!!! It's more because of the lift, not the duration.

I heard back from David...

He said that the springs are week, but that they ran their Evo to 8000 rpm's on the Stock springs with no problems.

I figure I will just keep my stock springs for now then.

stock springs will NOT brake with high lift cams
but you might experience surge at higher rpm

everytime you upgrade cams its smart to upgrade sprigns and retainers, imo
in japan every manufacturer recommends it

Upgrade them, also with David and the high rev. It was done with 264 cams. I am upgrading mine for a sense of saftey. Like Maki says ,anytime you change cams it is (recommended) to change out springs. Why not do it along with arp headstuds and a new headgasket. Everyone has the opinions on the matter but for me all I can say is, you can never be to safe.

Well, now you all are making me think I should have it done. But there is no way I am going to drive the 3.5 hours back up north to Buschur to have it done so I guess I will look for someone local to do it. Anyone know of a place in the Cincinnati area that can do this work?

I have 272's and no springs or retainers. I Believe that the 272's may have longer duration, but not much more lift so the stock springs are NOT taxed.

JUN cams have a more agressive lift, so they would have to have upgraded springs.

I am interested in putting in springs + retainers and ARP bolts when I have my HKS 272's installed. How much will all this cost to be installed at a place like Pruven? How much more $$ would it cost to have the springs + retainers installed when already having the 272's installed?

I am under the assumption that the entire head must be pulled to have the springs + retainers installed and that just the valve cover must be pulled to install the cams. Am I right or wrong?

with eventual wear or future mods dictate that springs are nessassary then? I worry more about the future well being but also my wallet (then and now)

I dont understand why you guys go through the trouble and cost of upgrading the springs/retainers and then go cheap on the cams and miss out on having 11.5mm lift or 12.0mm lift. These kind of lift rates make the whole powerband grow even more then the 272's do.

I know that HKS cams work, and are good quality, and don't idle too bad, and don't lose too much low/mid range torque. Higher lift would affect both idle and the low and mid range torque.

Yeah the 265 duration would help creat a vacuum at idle by keeping the valves closed and the lift would spool any turbo up like it has NOS

I put the Works springs and retainers in just to make sure as well. This was before David offered his and the Works set was $330. There is no reason to change them now, but I would trust the Buschur pieces as well.
