Need some advice on a turbo upgrade

Alright.

I have been searching around on the forums, and I found a bunch on this topic, but most are geared towards drag racing, and I was hoping some people with a bit of experience with various turbos could possibly chime in.

I am about to rebuild mt car which currently has a blown motor, I was going to replace it with a low mileage take out. Replace timing set etc. And then install it into the car. The car itself is going to be getting rebuilt as a hill climb and time trials car (so drag racing isn't in the picture), as well as sometimes driver. Mostly the usual horrifyingly conflicting requirements that people want.

Now, the idea is I want to do this on a budget, and use the stock block (maybe head studs.) And I am gathering used parts etc. I basically threw down the gauntlet for myself as go as fast as possible (reliably-ish) for as little as possible. Knowing full well I might need to replace the engine, but, that is of course not the preferred outcome. My goal? I'd love to hit 500 ish, but I also know that might not be realistic. The supporting mods will be better intercooler, piping, ported or aftermarket intake, 1200cc injectors, double pumper, mild cams, etc.

So, I am looking into turbos, I was poking at the FP Red (understanding it might need to be reined in to prevent a pop), the Black (have been unable to find a good dyno sheet) and the PTE 6262 (which looks like it pulls like a freight train, but doesn't do it until very late). And I was hoping people might have some thoughts or input as to what might be able to do it while having the most useable powerband without just blowing the side out of the motor.

Thanks in advance

100% go with an MHI housing red, and do GSC S2 cams with 5040 spring/retainer kit. With other appropriate bolt ins it will do ~500whp on E85 and tuning it for safety of the stock engine is not a concern, it is easily handled by a good tuner.

If you have access to e85 a FP Green (MHI housing) would be perfect. If only pump gas, a FP Red (MHI housing) would probably be your best bet.

Completely agree with this build!

Thank you for the replies.

Sadly, where I am E85 is not super readily available. Its getting there, but, I cannot guarantee access at the moment.

Would a Red with the S2 cams be capable of getting close-ish to said goals?

Thanks again.

The MHI Red is tried and true but since you don't have access to E85 you may need something larger like the FP black to make 480-500whp on pump gas. You could also move into a 6262/35R but its going to be much laggier then a red/black. Its a balance of fun street car vs making a certain number. If you like the way the stock turbo hits , then a bolt on Fp just makes more of the same thing and doesn't taper off.

Fwiw, I never ran my red hard on pump gas and it made about 430whp at 23psi. But on E85 it made 500whp keeping the Tq around 400.

Thank you, that helps, now I guess my other question is, how does the black compare to the red, I assume its designed to live between the red and the larger frame units?

I had a Red with S2 cams with intercooler, intake and fuel setup on 93 octane. was pushing 450whp conservatively at 27 PSI. Had some head studs and some other mods but nothing major. If I pushed it probably could've gotten closer to 500. Spooled real quick so wasn't much lag and hit hard.

To "safely" make 450whp+ on a stock engine with just cams on pump gas, you should really be moving on to a Vband turbo kit with a small-ish turbocharger. Especially if you want to be more around 500. A precision gen2 5558, Garrett Gen2 gtx3076, or the new Garrett G30-770 or maybe even the G30-660 might do it.

And an upgraded intake manifold like the Magnus V5 would help a lot at that point as well.

Now another question, sorry for so many, how would say a red with the SS housing compare? I am trying to understand how a slower spool would effect things.

It will make more power up top as it’s less restrictive but it will spool slower for sure, some have said as much as 500-700 rpm. I’m sure someone will chime in, the mhi housing spools better.

The SS housing on the red changes the spool up considerably. A few people have trapped 132-141 with it so the SS housing adds at least 5mph in the 1/4 mile. I'd guess about 40 whp more then an MHI red ( on E85 ) But the lower backpressure really allows the engine to breath and go past 8000 well.

Its a bummer you don't have E85 locally. It really makes any engine/turbo wake up.

I know right? I am still trying to identify a tuner I want to use. But, once I do, I want to look into some form of switchability, so i could possibly E85 when it is available.

So, I guess right now, I am possibly looking into a Red, I am not so much obsessed with a number, I just want to be able to bomb my class. And I would think a solid mid 400s awhp would probably do the trick as well, I just threw it down as a marker to struggle to. Right now, before it blew it was low 300s, like 310 if I remember. so a 140-150hp boot in the butt would be very helpful.

If I am horribly misguided let me know there.

Check out Emery at STM in Rochester for a tuner.
