Oil on Camshaft position sensor normal or not?
Oil on Camshaft position sensor normal or not?
There are mixed answers. I need to know the correct answer. Is there suppose to be oil on the Camshaft position sensor? I just put in a new 4g64LR 10:5:1 in my Evo 9. No balance shafts or oil squirters. It has been idling lean -22 on the wideband but pulling fuel like it’s rich. New fuel pump, spark plugs, Map and under 1k miles on 2150 injectors. All four plugs were coming out black full of carbon build up. So I took the car in for a beak in dyno tune because I figured it was in the tune. So he got the O2 fuel trims around where they are suppose to be. Wideband is now reading 18-19AFR. Tuner suggested to just go off of the o2 sensor reading for now because at cruise and WOT the wideband reads correct . The car break ups at high rpm. No boost leaks or exhaust. All plugs are now burning normal except for number 3 it’s coated black. My last 2.3 motor melted number 3 piston. I’m getting spark and getting fuel to that cylinder. He suggested COP and to send the injecotors out. On the way home cruising around 15 AFR the car start running leaner and learner until died on highway. Let it sit for about 5 mins. It started it up ran okay for another 2 mins than started stuttering/misfiring while being revd and wouldnt let me go past around 3k. Limped to my shop close by. When trying to give it gas it goes straight to lean. Both camshaft position sensors were soaked in oil. I cleaned them off started the car back up. Now no misfire when reving up and let’s me go past 3k clean for about 1 min. Then starts mis firing while revving and the Camshaft post sensor are both soaked almost immediately.. Sorry for the story but I’ve had and still own Dsms for over 15 years and my Evo for 6 years never had an issues like this. Also when I swapped the Camshaft position sensor for the hell of it. The AFR finally went up while idling to 15-16! It of course threw a code from the intake and exhaust being different. I’m starting to think I need a Kiggly HLA pressure regulator. Any input appreciated..

Oil on the cam position sensor is normal; they bathe in it. Kiggly HLA will not solve your problem. Perhaps try a new front o2 sensor. Also its strange that cylinder 3 plug is black. Have you tried swapping injectors to see if perhaps that one is stuck open? Also, might be wise to do the same thing with #3 coil.
Personally before throwing money at it I would start with the free things like swapping coils and injectors. Of course do one at a time to isolate what's been changed.

It was the injectors! That have under 500 miles on them! I’m 99.9% sure that’s whats melted number 3 piston on my 2.3. On top of that from leaving the injectors in the intake manifold for 3 months. After using 93 fuel. It caused an injector to be stuck open! So I have 2 bad injectors. I been already hesitant about running E85 in them because I don’t drive my car everyday. So $800 cost me my 2.3 and almost my 2.4LR.
