K&N short ram intake still junk? (I know the Typhoon kit is crap)

Hi evom,

I had a question I was able to find a K&N intake kit (one with carbon fiber heat shield) for really cheap. Now after doing some research about the K&N Typhoon intake people say that the hard turbo inlet pipe is what causes all the problems with the maf readings. I'm wondering if I use the stock turbo inlet pipe and just used the K&N filter, maf adapter, and carbon fiber heat shield whether or not the intake would still give problems?

Would you just recommend selling it and going another direction or just stick with the stock airbox? I admit the only reason I got the K&N kit was because it had carbon fiber and it was cheap LOL. Any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

PS. I did do a search nothing mentioned the "short ram" kit which is the same kit as the Typhoon except you use the stock turbo inlet pipe. There was one post but didn't really go in-depth on the performance or if there was issues with stalling/ maf reading problems.

Why not pick up a Samco silicone intake tube to get rid of the stock accordion pipe and use the K&N filter w/ shield? The hard pipe is where the problem is with MAF cars.

I think we're pretty much at that point where we just go speed density and get rid of the maf and the problems.

I wouldn't be against that at all..I guess I just wanted some confirmation that it was in fact the K&N hard inlet pipe that causes the drive-ability problems. Thanks for the confirmation about the hard inlet pipe, I guess I gotta start looking for a good oem inlet replacement.

Anyone specifically running the K&N short ram kit with no problems before I take the plunge haha?

Thanks for the vouch! I got the short ram part of the intake installed and left the stock oem turbo inlet. The Evo runs fine no stalling, bucking, or any kind of hesitations or (power choking up top). It definitely made the intake suction and bpv more audible. For now I'm satisfied with it, I'll report back if I have any problems in the future. Not bad for $60

Thanks!

Hey SoSo looks good and glad to hear no issues. FYI, I looked and I have my old Samco intake on a shelf if you want it.

I've had no problems and great driveability with the K&N Typhoon kit on my 2003 over the last 7 years and ~50k miles. It was the first and only mod for a little while, and as the setup has changed and the car has been re-tuned over and over, the car has has always had great driveability. The car has always been and still is a MAF car.
* Most opinions around here are that it's the inlet pipe that causes the issue rather than the filter, but I've been running a dry filter nearly the whole time. MAFs and wet style filters have a rich history of problems, just generally. Normally this is due to being over oiled either from the factory or user error after being cleaned. I just didn't want to mess with it, so I swapped in a dry filter pretty quickly.

I no longer live in CA and have been considering a different intake, but mostly just because i'm on a 71HTA now w/ 84mm inlet.

Hmmmm would that require a retune or affect any drivability on my stock tune? I'm really not looking to retune at the moment.

Thanks for the review...glad the K&N has worked out for you so long. Probably since you have tuned each time something was changed. I guess I was more wanting to know how the K&N would react to a stock ecu as my Evo is stock and the only power mod is a cbe. Haha yeah I've also heard of this problem of over oiling the wet filters...I have cleaner/ re-oil kit from K&N that I use on my 4runner also (which is also maf) that I've learned not to put so much oil. I haven't had problems in either car with the wet filters equipped, so all and all the K&N was a good purchase on my part (as long as you don't use the K&N hard pipe inlet).
