How much turbo is too much turbo HPDE
How much turbo is too much turbo HPDE
Looking to get into HPDE and running my car on the track. It's no longer the daily anymore and the joys of doing pulls on the street just isn't much fun anymore. My current setup is a JB FP Black with all the supporting mods (still on stock block) running E85. I've been reading up about solid track setups and it seems like most people are running much smaller turbos. My suspension is essentially 100% stock so I am going to focus my attention on that for now but I still feel like this is just too much turbo for the car and a smaller, quicker spooling turbo would better suit my needs. Stepping down to an FP Red just doesn't seem like it's worth the time/money to swap but maybe a green would?
Curious to see what you track guys are running and what would be a solid setup. I plan on building the block in the future but mainly looking for something reliable I can run hard and have some fun with while putting down some solid laptimes

Personally I think if you’re new to tracking I’d swap to a stock IX turbo or FP Green and drive the car on pump gas until you get some seat time under your belt. E85 even on a stock IX turbo is still too much power for someone who’s a beginner IMO. I’d track on one of the above turbos on your stock suspension, as you gain experience I’d upgrade the suspension. Brakes are really the only thing you’ll need to sort out.

I'd also recommend getting seat time with an instructor. Drive within your limits .
If you have the MHI black. Why not just run the car at the wastegate pressure 22-23psi on E85 . I can't get onboard with going to a stock turbo once you've had power or know about backpressure.
Good brake pads/ducts are must.
Its also a good idea to run 20-50 oil at the track and eventually get a racefab pan as you get faster or run a sticky tire.

Before I did my turbo upgrade and build, I was already convinced on wanting an FP Red but tracking really punishes the motor and running gear especially when its hot, so.I talked to a few track guys, who raced Evo's in improved production events, about what they believe to be the best turbo for tracking and all of them said, the smallest and most reliable set up possible which changed my mind to something more like your FPGreen but even smaller, a GTP 712, combining this with S2s and ID1300X it spins up fast and gave me a torquey punch out of the corners with zero lag which is what you want around a circuit. If you can stay stock for a while and just get seat time youill really appreciate upgrades in the future and have a better frame of mind by talking to guys out on the track what works and what doesn't.
