Evo 8 wont move 🤷‍♀️

Hi

my evo 8 today decided it didn’t want to play ball and whilst driving there was a strange noise that came from the front (I think)

I came to a stop and now when I try to move off it feels like something has locked up within the drivetrain somewhere. It won’t move in gear or in neutral. It rolls a few inches forward/backwards and then feels like something has locked up.

ive jacked it up on all 4 corners. Front wheels seem to move freely, the back ones do, but seem to have a lot of resistance. But the back wheels do move with a bit of force.

unfortunately when all 4 wheels are back on the ground it still won’t move in gear or in neutral.

can anybody suggest anything that I can check?

many thanks

What happens when you depress the clutch? Hoping something is locked up / worn w/the clutch vs TC / Tranny?

when I try to drive forwards or backwards, it moves a couple of inches and then locks up. Clutch pedal feels fine, bites in the same position it always has.

it’s like the brakes have been pressed after pulling off.

How many miles on the drivetrain? Any of the components been through a re-build?

Knowing how the Evo has been used & mileage may give a clue

As far as I’m aware it’s never been rebuilt. Cars on about 65k. Running approx 600bhp. Has exceedy twin plate clutch and flywheel. Plus has had regular gb oil changes

I remember now seeing your post on the spark plug oiling issue. I see you have picked up this Evo already modded w/maybe some of the history unknown?

No doubt pushing some flywheel HP at 600. Let me see if a couple of our Gurus can offer more? @CurseDSM @Pal215

Indeed, this sounds like a ring and pinion failure and looking under that inspection cover is a good place to start ^. Whenever a drivetrain issue arises, it's also good to drain and inspect all drivetrain fluids. Since our cars are AWD, it's hard to diagnose the problem quickly due to the rear diff being coupled to the transfer case. It would be odd, but not impossible if your rear differential is locked up due to a failed ring/pinion.

what else could cause the drivetrain to lock up whilst in neutral? Cheers

This plate is located on the transfer case, which has the driveshaft coming out of it next to the transmission. Be ready to catch some oil.

Am I right in assuming a recon tc is expensive?

Well, any drivetrain part is going to be expensive. Let's find out what's wrong first before we jump to conclusions.

TCs typically sell for 800 to 1200 bucks on here.

thanks for the advice guys. I’ll check tomorrow and report back my findings. Is there anything else worth checking if that’s not the issue?

I’ll drop the oil at some point this weekend and check for any signs of metal within.

does the rear diff and tc use the same oil?
