How much power can the stock pistons handle?
I've looked around here and the Googles and haven't found a general consensus on how much power the stock pistons can take.
I've seen multiple posts on "stock internals" handling around 450hp, but I'm assuming that people are referring to the rods, as the rods are usually the first to go.
I'm upgrading a stock motor, which has 80k miles, with some H beams and was trying to keep the stock pistons to save some money and since the engine is in great condition. It was in a front end collision that tweaked the motor mounts and cracked the cam gears. I bought it and was uncertain of what the internals, valves, etc looked like. I tore it down and everything looked good. I figured I'd throw in some rods to make it stronger, but I don't have plans to exceed 450hp-500hp.
Any thoughts, ideas, criticism is welcome.
Thank you.

The main issue is torque. Keeping the engine "safe" means keeping the rods inside which means staying around 400wtq, and if you have a smaller turbo managing boost below 4500 to keep torque a bit below 400 below 4500.
The pistons can handle whatever the rods will handle as long as your timing and AFR's are good.
If you're putting Hbeams in, do pistons. Wiseco HD's with a good torque plate hone and proper clearances won't have any blow by issues.

I'll say that if you are already this deep, the pistons and machine work needed is a pretty small price to pay for peace of mind.
Just my opinion, but I'd go for a set of wiseco's or whatever just because I was already in this deep.

As far as building a motor goes, it makes the most sense to upgrade to forged internals since I'll already be in there. Especially if I get a feistier build going later. I was trying to save the 1k it'll cost in pistons and machine work but, I'll just take my time and save up some cash. Maybe finish up the GTI VR6 flipper.
Thanks all!
Thanks all!
