Supra TT Fuel Pump vrs. Walbro
Supra TT Fuel Pump vrs. Walbro
I see the consensus on this board is that the Walbro fuel pump is the only way to go when looking for an upgraded pump for the EVO 8. I am looking at other alternatives myself. Quite a few DSM owners in my area have opted to use Supra TT OEM pumps as opposed to Walbro pumps for several reasons. Some of which are the fact that it's quieter, flows more fuel, and is more reliable (Toyota OEM quality). I've done research, and as to the quieter issue, most people say they can't even hear their Walbro pumps, simply because it is mounted under a pad of foam (the rear seat). I'm not 100% sure if the Supra pump flows more fuel than the Walbro, but that is what I have heard, and maybe someone here has some hard numbers to back that up or prove it wrong. As far as reliability goes, I have not heard any stories from board members here about their Walbro pumps dying, but I have heard of multiple pumps dying from 240SX owners. Maybe that is because turbo 240's have been around a lot longer than EVOs. I don't want to have a pump failure lead to an engine failure. I am simply looking at other alternatives. Does anyone know if the Supra pump will fit in the EVO as it does in the 1G DSM cars? Any other opinions on this subject? I'm sure the simple answer everyone here will have is "Just buy the Walbro, I have it and it works fine, no problems" but that doesn't help me explore the other options, so if that's your response, save yourself that typing time, thanks.

The Supra pump has been reported not to work on the evo. A major reason it was used on DSMs is due to noise levels versus the walboro. That is not the case with the Evo, as you cannot hear the pump due to pump assembly. Hope this helps.
That larger issue for me is reliability. There are stories that the walbro fails. Even Rob at RRE was telling me that he's starting to have walbros failon his turbo lancers. RRE's walbro failed during the SCC shootout on their evo. Already one of my customers has had his walbro fail on him. I too am looking at other brands at this point. Since I have a speed density standalone about to go in, the last thing i want is my fuel pump to die. I heard the HKS pumps are really good, apparently they are OEM Mazda RX-7 pumps that flow almost 300+ LPH.
Do you know why the Supra pump is rumored not to work? Pumps aren't the most complex electronic devices, you supply power and a ground and they start pumping. I'm pretty sure the Supra pump is a dual rate pump from the factory, meaning it has a high and low mode, but all the DSM guys run them in high flow mode all the time. I may buy a pump and see if I can get it to work unless there are some definitive reasons why it wouldn't.

walbro has been working awesome on my wrx for about 4-5 months of hard 20psi boosting....and my evo is waiting for the walbro to be installed. the only time u hear it in the rex is before u turn on the car, u can hear it priming etc.
Well I know 5 people in my area personally that have had their Walbros fail. Granted they were all on 240SX's, but still. I'm going to pick up a Supra pump, they run about $170 new, which I'll pay the extra $60 or so for the added peace of mind.

I feel more confident knowing I have the Walbro and not the OEM which can suddenly drop output once it heats up under consistent load. I think Robi's pump failed because he was running with very little gas in the tank and during cornering, the pump ran dry when the fuel shifted. If the pump is working and fine when you install it, there should be no reason to think it will fail anymore than another pump. BTW, I cannot hear my Walbro.
