Question Factory Thermostat Temp?

Has anyone changed out to lower water temps? What is factory setting? 190? or?

i would never recomend using a lower temp thermostat, and dont ever take it out.
this may have worked on old carborated cars but not computer controled fuel injected cars

the engine must be warm in order to go into closed loop, also your ect sensor can cause a change in fuel trim, if the ecu sees a high voltage signal from the ect (cold engine) it will increase the fuel trim. you'll run rich all the time.

a thermostats only job is to help warm up the engine, not help cool.

i tried this on a honda one time with a 180 degreee thermostat the car warmed up and reached a max temp of 214 when viewed on a scan tool.
with a 160 degree thermostat in it reached a max temp of 212 and it took alot longer to get from 160 to 212

i cant explain the 2 degree difference i figured it would be the same... but it was the next day when i tested it again, i let it sit over night.

you wont gain anything from a lower temp thermostat, that was a fad and if anything youll hurt the performance of your car.

you will really mess things up if you dont run a thermostat at all, possibly constat open loop operation, veyr high idle and running extrmemly rich all the time.

also dont run a higher pressure cap either theres no point, raising the pressure raises the boiling point that is true. but on a stock cooling system this isnt gonna help one bit. the system were designed to work together perfectly, just leave it alone, the best thing you can do is make sure your anitfreeze is in good shape and in the proper dilution, (60%-70% antifreeze to distilled water), change it every 3 years or 30k miles.

if you want to do someting maybe you can try something like water weter or 40 degrees below 0 or somethin. i doubt they could drop the temp but maybe 5-10 degrees which wont hurt nothin, but dont expect it to help anything either.

The Ralliart Thermostat is worth the money. The cooler your car runs to a certian degree the better it will run and it will avoid pre mature knock as well. Why else do they make bigger radiatiors and bigger FMIC's. If you can get the water cooling the block down by 18-20 degrees f why not. DSM owners have used the ralliart thermostat for years. It will not hurt your car but you will not gain 20 hp either.

bigger radiatiors and bigger FMIC's
these have nothing to do with temperature of cooling, more of volume. more hp, more heat produced, hence need for bigger radiator to keep the proper temperature. and fmic, i dont why the hell you brought this up, this has NOTHING to do with cooling the car down...

Why in the hell did I bring it up, I don't know i guess from the sound of you, d@mn. A bigger radiator can handle more volume and it also cools more efficiently being bigger with more volume cooling your car down more. The thermostat opens earlier alow the water being cooler to circulate cooler right. A FMIC does a similar thing as well, it is more efficent in cooling the air down so you can get a more agressive tune on your car too and yes it can handle more volume as well. Just trying to give an example, is this ok?

yes the cooler the engine runs the more it will be able to fight off detonation but a thermostat will not lower the operrating temp of the engine, ONLY time youll need a lower thermostat is if you change the heat exchanger (radiator)to something more effiecient. say one that make your engine run at 180 degrees and now you need a thermostat that opens at 160

a thermostats ONLY JOB is to help warm up the engine, once its done its job the thing just stays open, if the cooling system is designed to operate at 220 degrees its gonna run at 220 degrees

the thermostat opens at 180 degrees after that its job is done, if it opens at 160 hows that gonna lower the temp? its still gonna keep warming up to 220 degrees, itll just take longer.
the passage between both thermstats will be the same size its not like its gonna flow more water through it

so how on earth will a thermostat lower the vehicles operating temp?

bigger radiators and fmic is a totaly different story.

but a thermostat or cap alone will do nothing at all for the temps
