I talked to the dealership again and they said that I'm gonna have to pay upwards of $1300 just to get them to look at it, and if the broken part is covered under warranty, then they'll replace it free. If not, then it'll be an additional $2400. **** that. I bought my Evo to have fun, not to unnecessarily remove funds from my pocket and add drama to my life. Anyone got a nice 5/6-speed 98 Nissan 240sx to trade? j/k heh..

About the $840.00 excedy clutch, where exactly is this at? A link would be appreciated.

im using a cusco twin plate. i've had it for about 2000 miles. I can tell you that it chatters like a ****. but i believe it can hold because of how hard it grabs. I daily drive on it and its pretty easy. you can engage it smoothly as well.

I put an HKS gdmax in mine about 6000 miles ago. The main reasons are because you can get all the parts to rebuild it, when and if thats necessary, and also the throwout bearing connection is totally redesigned on the hks, it does away with the locking clip which some people have had problems with. It does chatter, people will ask why your new car makes "that noise" but i dont think its that bad. The clutch pedal feel is softer than stock and its easy to get used to the engagement of it, which is not harsh at all.

Thanks for the replies Bom and ill. What exactly is the chatter noise you're talking about? Something left loose after installation of the clutch? I've been reading about the noise in a few reviews, and it sounds like it could get annoying pretty quickly. Are there any sites around that might have a wav of the sound?

A question for you ill, how hard is it to find pieces to rebuild the HKS clutch? The idea of rebuilding it sounds like it could save me some money in the long run, but it would be kind of useless if the pieces are hard to come by.

Consider RRE's X clutch... it has 800 lbs more holding power then stock and looks prefectly stock for the warranty

The pieces are getting easier to find, I know they were back ordered a while back. I have a rebuild kit I bought a few months ago when I heard HKS was raising prices and I too was concerned about future availability of parts. It consist of the clutch discs and center plate and the pressure plate nuts (no pressure plate as some have advertised). All of the replacement part numbers are in the manual.
The clutch chatter sounds like a metallic rattle coming from the trans when the clutch is disengaged and sometimes very lightly when you decelerate. Its nothing the radio cant drown out and it is normal with twin plates because of the floating center plates and discs. Its a very small price to pay for reliability! 's pathetic excuse for mechanics will never touch my car again! warranty or not! EVO certified my ***! "you read the manual now you are certified".

Nerf and you other guys with clutch issues, please take time to log your info in the manufacture date vs. car problems thread in the drivetrain, etc.. forum i am compiling a list of problems correlated to the manufactured date on your car, this is to be used by new owners, to know what to expect, as well as those involved in class action lawsuits.

if we compile enough evidence about particular groups of evos (those manufactured on X date, have an overwhelming number of clutch/rotor/, etcc.. problems) it can be a great resource to many evo owners. thanks, J.R.

chatter only comes on when im engaging the clutch. So when i step on the clutch i hear the two disc rubbing on each other until i release the clutch and it grabs.

to regular people its wierd and annoying. to me, i feel its hardcore. I just hope it last alot of miles.
