Cam Gear timing
Cam Gear timing
Alright I can't find the damn thread but want to revisit the cam gear setting thread that either SilverSurfer or MalibuJack started. (can't remember who)
What is your final conclusion as to the setting with the HKS 272 cams?
I am up in the air with the 264 or 272s and may be interested in the 272 with you specs that I last read.

Hi Tim,
Here you go https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...timing+testing
With the settings I use (-4/1.5) the 272/272 cams are just as civil as stock cams (provided you add fuel at idle), and they give a nice power increase. Some one else told me they saw the HKS EVO running -2/+1, similiar offset but different values, I have been meaning to try these settings but....
From what I can tell the 264 cams seem to work just as well with the stock turbo and require less tuning effort for idle/drivability. As for which to get, I think it depends on your future goals. If you plan to get a big turbo down the road then get the 272's, if not your probably better off with the 264's. As in my case, it may also depend on what's available and how patient you are, I wanted 264's but could not find any, so I said the hell with it and got the 272's.
I just poked my head in here to answer a PM and happened to see your post.
If some of you were wondering where I have been, my work schedule has picked up dramaticaly and I am buying a house (when it rains it pours). So the car hobby has been on the back burner for the past couple of months.
I have been learning an awful lot about real estate and now morgage options
. These morgage brokers are worse than used car salesmen
.
We are closing mid July and then I get to move, the fun never ends
.
I have driven the EVO twice in the past six weeks, partly because I managed to screw up the fourth gear syncro. I was going to take it apart but with moving on the horizon I did not need the added stress of my car in pieces sitting in the garage. Once we are settled in the new house (three car plus garage yea!), I will be back to my EVO project. In the meantime I am not checking this board much, but I will try to answer PM's when I can.
Kind regards,
Eric

My interest in cam gears only pertains to 272s. At 264 I don't see the same problems. With SilverSurfer's cam settings I am looking to gain idle quality and improved idle vacuum (correlating to less air stall in the MAF). I still haven't decided what cams I will go with but since it is not my daily driver I am more likely to go big because I may do the same with the turbo later on.
I have the 264i/272e combo and I just tried the -4i / -1.5e . Initial butt dyno feels flat, however smoother, no big initial jolt but does have a smooth pull to it, it idles a little bit better with a small lump. This is with a mail in dyno-flash without adjustments for the cams yet.
I was originally set at -3/-3 and power delivery felt stronger with that surge down low while it slowly tapered at the top end. I'll experiement more when I get reflashed for the cams.
