Stock Clutch SUCKS
ive got 16,000 miles and only smelled it twice. that was after over-reving to 6000 and releasing the clutch. it slips a little but no big deal. i learned how to drive stick on my evo so i figure if i **** up ill know. also ive read of people complaining of spongy pedal feel once you break the 12.9 mark. it was in a sport compact mag with the 1st evo to break 11's on the stock turbo.

With your driving habits you'll need a heavier clutch and a better transfer case (with a better LSD). This is not an option for you... you NEED these.
Just before you install all of that I'd also suggest you practice launching (not on streets though!) so you can get maximum grip without burning the clutch. You should be able to accomplish both. I do and I've had the stock clutch since one day one (which is almost two years ago now).
Well... The only variable in this matter is the driver... There are other contributing factors but driver style is still number one factor. Other factors include the restrictor pill in the clutch slave, weird design of the TC where the pinion gear is driven by the ring gear, and in certain occasions, poor QC on the clutch...
Anyway, before you start complaining about the clutch, look at other factors. More importantly, your driving style. My friend's evo has gotten 30k out of his stock clutch and it's still going strong. I have almost 19K on my stock clutch and it's going strong as well.
The stock clutch can handle quite a bit of power, 325 - 375 HP (speculation)... Treat it like crap, it'll crap out on you real quick... Take care of it and don't dump it like you would on a FF and it'll last a long time...
What I've seen most people doing before doing a clutch upgrade is removing the restrictor pill and replacing the stock clutch line with a SS line... Added benefits is you'll have more precise control over the clutch and have only your self to blame if it craps out in 6k miles...
Just my $.02

I think that there's a "clutch healthy" and a "clutch unhealthy" way to launch. If you smell it burning, try something else! I've over-revved a few time during auto-x and basically the car stays where it's at, the engine revs but you don't move. She gets off the line pretty fast if you get it right though (just about 4000 rpm, hold it a sec, then slip it out kinda quick).
Think of it as in internal burnout. Same exact principle, just not as pleasing to the eye.

looks like someone's clutch's slipping already.
4000 rpm + smell is just that, slipping clutch.
U know, stock clutch is really ok, when you don't launch with it.
I believe that it'll last you 50,000 miles + without a launch.
