Hello to all,
I am doing Evo modifications here in Germany.
I have seen a few Evo 8´s from the US ( mainly Air Force and Army People ) which have blown their head gaskets on our Racetracks or Highways ( mainly Nuerburgring )
After read out their remaps ( Flashes ) i can see why.
They will have mappings for 1/4 Mile Mile events or R**D Ra**ing, so they make huge power for a short time.
Getting such a car onto a German Highway and drive with 120 -130 MPH for longer time will bring the engine into the Knock correction. BUT sometimes the Mapper did also modify the Low Octane Map to prevent the Knock correction. BOOOMMM...
Also, at the Nuerburgring you will drive 10 Minutes with round about 85% WOT...
BOOOMMM again.

A good Tuner will ask first what YOU want to be tuned for. After that he might suggest parts and costs.
I am always asking the Customer what he want to do with the Car.
And sometimes they are surprised, why i would chose a larger or smaller Turbo than what they asked for.

I am currently running an GT35R Buschur Spec on an 2 Ltr HR Buschur Spec short block. Before i did an long testing with the evo9 - 20G -5.
The GT35R is fine for Max Power at the Dragstrip! But on the Race ( Round ) Track i would chose an smaller Turbo, because part throttle surge isnt what you want in an Part throttle corner.
Withe the 20G, it makes more fun at the round track, but not enough Power for the Drag Strip.
So the really best could not be chosen by HP number from a Dyno... its how it works in the Environment the customer will bring it in.

Just got back from a couple weeks out there (Spangdahlem) and I said to myself the exact same thing "If I had my car here in Germany I would either end up popping the engine cap or flying off the road into a wheat field".

Lukily I only had a bicycle rental - but I was able to enjoy the buitiful countryside.

Some purchaced tunes even have identical high and low octane fuel maps which I feel is stupid. I don't see problem with timing like this but fuel - come on! As if the tune was intended to knock itself into low octane.

steffen,

Great info. But like we talked before, I think my situation may have been a bad water pump which caused the blown head gasket. I will pull it out and then make sure if this was the cause or not.

dont know as I didnt pull it out yet to inspect it. however I had a previous water pump failure and I did have little to no coolant in my reservoir. My mistake before taking it out for Nurburgring was to check the level in the coolant itself. A very dumb mistake. More info when I get the car inspected.

Did you get any SES code (water temp, engine temp, ..) prior to failure?

What about the temp guage? Just wondering if the built in system can detect such things in time

Thank you Sir

Good information! Most people that come to the shop are more concerned with top WHP and bragging rights. Just because you made 350whp on a 12:1 tune, doesn't mean that you should drive 30 mins on the Highway at WOT.

I have had customer's ask me to come to Moroso with them for the day. If my schedule is open or some what open and I am taken care of for my time. I'm more than happy to. I do suggest if a customer is going to road race or do crazy top speed runs over and over on the highway to add Sunoco 100 octane (we have a pump here) or Sunoco 109 unleaded. So many things can and do go into each different car and setup it's hard to discuss throughly. And yes. If you have datalogging capabilities such as the AEM EMS. Become familiar with the internal logging, laptop logging and live parameters. If you dont understand them. Ask your tuner to spend ten minutes going over them with you. Great thread to raise awareness!
