what are "ECU" and "EMS" ??
They are basically the same thing. They both control the engine and/or car. The terms are technically interchangeable based on definition. Car manufacturers tend to like to use ECU or even ECM. EMS means the same thing but AEM just happens to have a product out that uses that string of letters in the name. The aftermarket can put out a product and call it an ECU. In fact, they do. Also, the ECU is just a part. The aftermarket can even reprogram it with a different program. It is just nomenclature and I would not let yourself get too tied up in what the difference is when it is all basically the same thing - the brain of the car.
yoyoyoyoyoming,
the ECU (engine controll unit) is what all cars have to controll all the vital functions. now the stock aka O.E.M. Ecu cannot be adjust at all. the only way u can adjust a stock ECU is to get a piggyback system. which i guess even has its limitations (correct me if i'm wrong). thats why the majority of evo owners and tuners for others cars just buy a aftermarket ECU, like the AEM EMS. this system actually completely replaces your stock ECU and gives you endless controll over the way your car will run and make power.
for the evo at least having this aftermarket ECU is a most if u are really gonna tryin to bring out a lot of power from the 4g63 engine. from what i seen in a lot of the tuner magazines and from other evo owners, the car is tuned very mildly. that why a few bolt-ons bring out so much power.
i hope this answered your question. i'm not really an expert on the evo or an aftermarket ECU. i'm sure that u will get some more replys from other owners that will help you out. by the way tryin lookin throught the past headlines on the evolutionm.net home page. AEM host a tuning day where evo owners could buy and get the AEM EMS system installed and tuned. if i remember correctly one evo made over 325whp with just the AEM EMS system with no other mods.
by the way, sorry that some of the members on this board acted like an *** to your question. for some reason some people just think they better than other people because they own an Evo
