Went to put Penzoil synchromesch in. Notices the dealer did not tighten the fill plug on the tranny case. Most trusted dealer in southern california and they can't tighten a freaking bolt. Reason #1 why the coilovers, exhaust, strut braces, sway bars, gauges, brake lines were installed by me, and it was done right the first time.

Haven't driven the car yet, but will inform later how it works with the penzoil.

I put the penzoil in, it is too slippery, the weight is too low. The stuff looks like motor oil. Does shift like butter, but the car is not a VW. I even called Penzoil about it, it is not GL-4 rated, which to be was a problem. I drained the stuff out and put MT-90 Redline in. When the transmission is cold , shifting into 2nd may be hard to shift into, but after a few minutes of driving it is fine. To me it seems the synchros engauge better with the MT-90, it is GL-4 rated (unlike the synchromesh). The thicker oil may hold/protect better with hard driving. That's my 2 cents.

Here's my plan, drive it until the gears really don't mesh, around 50000 miles bring it in for warrenty, get the tranny rebuilt and conviently replace the clutch which will be 1/4 of the actual cost.

problem to be solved!!
Hey guys my I just got ahold of my dealership about some misc parts i ordered and they told me that they have ordered some tranny parts for my 2003 evo. I had the same problem that you guys are talking about but my area rep said all of them do it to an extent. They told me that a service buliton was released today by mitsu to corect this problem and that my parts are on order. From what i was told they include 1-2 syncro, 2-3 syncro and 4-5 syncro all of whick are a new design to make the tranny shift like butter and stop the clunking noise . Ill get the service bulliton number for you and a few hours. This is good on mitsu that today when they recieved the buliton they went through all the evo owners that have had that problem at there (my)dealership and ordered the parts in. oh service buliton number is 0422003

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead, but my brand new 2005 EVO with about 180 miles does a 2nd to 3rd crunch. When I shift below 3K rpm all is fine, but when I shift between 3-4.5K I get the crunch. I am going to wait and see how things develop after the break in period is over. I am hoping that the crunch will go away after the tranny loosens up.

My brother has a Spec V that had similar shifting problems and he switched to Penzoil Syncromesh and that made the shifting much much better. Unfortunately, Penzoil Syncromesh is not GL-4.

My options is either to use the MT-90 or BG syncroshift. Is BG Syncroshift GL-4?

evoracerx, how is your transmission now?

my 05 evo has 400 miles on it right now and i also get the 2-3 shift crunch. im hopeing it goes away by 1k miles.. if not i guess its off to the dealer for some warranty work.

wondering if there are more 05's with this problem?

I am getting a crunch/grind going into second gear under WOT. I also get 3rd gear lock out under WOT. Anybody else getting this with an 05?

It will improve and eventually go away. Change your tranny fluid to Penzoil Syncromesh like I did. That improved the shifting significantly. Also do do the clutch restrictor mod and that will help a bit. You will still get the crunch on occassion, but it will improve a lot. Remember that the EVO is AWD and that affects the smoothness of the shift. Moreover, it is a cable shifter and that also affects the crispness of the shifting.

I have an '05 and it seems to do it in every gear randomly not all the time. Same crunch though, i hate it! I'm gonna throw some MT-90 Redline in it and just rock that unless something breaks; in which case it's under warrenty and i'll just get it fixed by the dealership... I don't think it's a big deal, seems to be a crunch more evo's tranny's then not.

I just got an 05 also this week, and it does it also. It doesnt do it all the time. I guess its common on the Evos. It did feel stiffer but now it feels alot better that im close to 1k. Maybe is bc its a new tranny? Im gonna use Syncromesh, i had it on my 03 and it got rid of it..

Do not use MT-90, it will NOT help at all. Your shifting will improve if you either use Penzoil syncromesh or BG Syncroshift.

MT-90 will not help you since it is synthetic. You need good old fashioned dino tranny oil. Use either BG syncroshift or Penzoil Syncromesh. I went with the latter and the shifting dramatically improved. The more I put miles on the car the more the shifting improves.
