Crunch in 2nd and 3rd gear
Crunch in 2nd and 3rd gear
At low RPM's below 3000 rpm's, when shifting into 2nd or 3rd gear (with clutch all the way down) the gears wil crunch into place, not grind, crunch. If you double clutch it won't do that. Above 3000 RPM's, this does not occur. I am thinking the clutch is not fully disengauging. Or maybe the synchros are acting up. Gear oil was changed with the Mitsubishi diamond gear oil (factory stuff) at 15000 miles. Car has 18000 miles on it and it has been doing it even before the oil change.
Any thoughts? Bleed clutch line, replace gear oil with BG Snchroshift, take the car in to the dealer?
Thanks

My new Evo (just took delivery on Sat) had two defective synchros from the factory, both of which were replaced under warranty before I took delivery of the vehicle. My guess is that you two may be dealing with the same.
It is going to the dealer tomorrow. I did not do it when I first had the car. Maybe the gear oil is crap, or maybe the synchros are shot? I called the dealer today and he said he would have the parts ready for tomorrow. I guess they will repalce the hubs and synchros.

I just got my evo 2 days ago and has only 215 miles on it. When im shifting from 2nd to 3rd i get that crunch to. I dont know **** about fixing it, should I jus take it to the dealer
GM Synchromesh is the same as "Pennsoil Synchromesh" - not BG synchromesh. Both GM and Pennsoil are semi-synthetic fluids that work wonders in the Evo tranny. also they are about $5 (Pennsoil)to $9 (GM) a qt.
What about using penzoil 75w-90 GL-4

What would be better Penzoil Synchromesh or BG?

well i took mine in and the regional manager/service guy took me for a ride in it. He said it feels totally normal to him and that for some reasons this starts at like a little above 1,000miles. He did not know why but said that yes it is normal. To me it does not feel normal. I mean of course its going to go into gear better at like 3,000 rpm due to the engine speed matching the tranny. But i have yet to drive acar when the tranny acts totally diffrent at 0-3000rpm than it does at 3001-7000 rpm. Im gonna hit up a guy here on the base and drive his evo and see if its the same way. Not trying to wine but just want to be sure. Also wil changing tranny fluid mess with the warenty if the tranny takes a crap?
