Cleaning the HKS RS Filter...

Can you do this? If you can clean it, should I use a K&N filter cleaning kit? I have one left over. Should I just use water, or water then oil it down. I just ordered a new filter from Lancershop, and they are 25 bucks a piece.

I know there was an old thread on here about the older HKS filters not being any good... is this still true. I know there are alot of the RS intakes out there, what are you guys doing with this dirty filter dilemma?

this is what Lancershop writes about the filter... they said it was for the Super Mega Flow, but listed it for the Racing Suction replacement. Are these filters the same...

from Lacershop.com...

"HKS recommends changing the air filter every 5,000 miles on your HKS suction to keep the filtering efficiency at an optimal level. The HKS Super Mega flow element is a 2-layer, dual density, wet-type polyurethane filter that uses an impregnated viscid fluid to attract and stop damaging dirt particles from entering your engine. This bonded fluid allows use of a larger pore design for maximum airflow without sacrificing filtration. Standard in the Super Mega Flow is the HKS trademark green filter element. Replacement filter elements are available in Red, Blue, Yellow. Fits The Lancer Evolution HKS Suction Intake"

he's right you must change them out, but they are only $25 directly from HKS. You may be able to get a deal if you buy a 5 pack or something from a vendor. But again, DO NOT CLEAN THEM!

It will fall apart if you clean it.

It will not fall apart. I've cleaned mine 5 or 6 times. I use the K&N recharge kit. I don't use much oil at all, just a light dusting. I also have a prefilter, (Outerwears Racing).
I haven't seen any breakdown in the HKS filter. I'm sure it won't last 100K miles like a K&N, but I"m NOT going to buy a new one every 5K.
I clean and oil it every 3k when I do an oil change.

It’s not hard to see why a company would say that you should change the filter instead of cleaning it, they will make more $$$. On the other hand those filter elements aren’t THAT expensive so I guess it’s up to each and everyone to decide what you want to do? I remember seeing some test of different after market filters and HKS came out the worst one. On the other hand lots of well known big bhp cars and tuning companies use HKS filers so I find it hard to believe they could be that bad?

We have a 5,000km (about 3,000miles) oil service interval on the EVOs here and I change my HKS filter every time I change the oil. A bit OT but If I’m not mistaking the service sheet for the oil change states that the oil filter should only be changed every 10,000km so at every second oil change you don’t change the filter. Need I say that I change the oil filter every time I change the oil since it’s even less expensive than the air filter element

I must say that the little bit of dust getting into the engine is not the big of a deal. It will be burnt off anyway. Today's engine's are the most high-tech, they are also the most durable. IMO

Dude I ran my last (orig) yellow filter for almost 20k miles. It was filthy as hell but that's mostly due to the Northeast winter I drove through. I'd say replace the filter no more than 10k miles for optimal performance. The 5k mark is just a marketing ploy. They are not cheap fockin filters!
