4th gear issues HELP

When I shift into 4th at higher RPM's I always grind the gear. It only happens above 5k or so. I'm thinking it is the shift forks being bent up. Does anyone know what this could be and about how hard it would be to fix? Thanks in advance.

Also I wanted to know what fluids I should switch to? For the tranny and the differential?

What your describing could be related to the selector and fork being bent.. however it may also be the clutch is not fully disengaging..

In any case, if the forks are what is damaged, I'm fairly certain it can be serviced without disassembling the entire transmission

I actually have a problem downshifting easily from 5th to 3rd it would grind or completely not select, and it definitely seems to be a bent fork (I had the shifter jam on me one day.. when I had it towed to the dealer, it was no longer jammed) but the shifter no longer felt the same. Yet the dealer insisted there was nothing wrong.

If your car is fairly stock, you should bring it to the dealer and have them change the fluid, it could be low, or contaminated.. it may help.

I have it going in Wednesday. With my car I can downshift from 5th to 3rd no problem, but shifting from 5th to 4th is really bad. I will have to see what the dealer has to say. Thanks for the advice. Way to go on the new title.

About 7k miles on it.

When it was new I sometimes grind my 5th gear in higher rpm's. Now its gone the problem is in the 4th gear. It always grind when you shift it fast in the higher rpms 5k and above at WOT

Delivery.. In your case thats a TSB item.. You can get yours fixed under warranty.. There's a selector bushing and sleeve, and revised synchro that is documented as a service bulletin.. take it in and get it fixed..

i had the same grinding shifting between 3 4 and 5th gears dealer fixed it they also told me my clutch was badly burnt and going to go out on me any moment and wanted me to replace it for like $700 i said no thanks id replace it with aftermakrket because in another 12k miles it would just happen again any way and its over 2k miles later still holding strong.

I had this problem only in 5th gear. Anything over 4800 rpms, it grinds only going to 5th. Othe r gears are fine at that rpm.

They diagnose it as a synchro prob. had this prob. even before the tsb came out. Covered under warranty but had to fight for it cause they blammed my cat-back exhaust and turbo timer.. ha.ha.ha

I don't think it's your clutch for it would be doing it in all the gears right?
Sorry to say it could be a synchro prob.

Try 2 quarts of BG synchroshift
and 1 quart of Redline lightweight shockproof.
Shifting might be a little notchier but might help with your grinding.
if not take it to the dealer stock of course.

Good luck hope everything works out.

Just a little update.

Tonight I changed all the fluids. I used all Redline products. For the tranny I used MT-90, the transfer case I used lightweight shockproof and the rear diff I used 75W90. I could not believe my 4th gear problems were solved. I was very stupid to not have changed my fluids sooner, but everything is much much better now. The job was very easy. It only took me and a friend at most 1 hour to change all 3. If you have shifting problems I would sugg. doing this asap.

yeah, changing fluids just seems to be a bandaid though.
