Are all high flow cats made equal?

So I've been on the market for a nice high flow cat now (can't run test pipes here in VA... unless you wanna get slapped with a huge fine), but I can't seem to pick one in particular.

The UR cat looks very tempting - considering it's the cheapest of them all. But how does it stack up against the more expensive ones like the Random Tech cat? I know I'm leaving out a couple of others, but the point is the Random cat is nearly twice the cost of the UR cat. Is there a noticeable difference, such that I should spring the extra cash for the Random cat?

actually, it depends on the part of VA--i believe after stafford county you do not have to pass emissions.

i dunno though, i'm catless and there's hardly any noticeable difference except a slight smell--though i don't know what it would be like with a full turboback exhaust, if you were thinking of sound issues.

I have the UR cat and it does not seem to do that much. I get the nasty exhaust smell, CEL code for inefficent cat, and soot builds up on the back of my car.

cuprsnel - something is up with your car then! The cat bolts in place of the factory one, flows much more, and absolutely will not trigger a CE light if all is running correctly! They are warrantied, so if you are having an issue, give them a shout to get you sqaured away. Let me know if you need any help diagnosing the issue

I can't comment on RT cats on the evo - I have never used one. On the Z, there are many reported issues with the cats collapsing. We had this same problem with RT cats on several cars from a few years ago, and found them difficult to deal with in terms of warranty replacement, so we dropped the line altogether. The Ultimate cats have been very good sellers for us, are CARB approved, and have a 5 years 50,000 warranty

Yikes, the Helix is also $300 too.

I guess I wish someone had done some base dyno runs, then tested each of the hi-flow cats. Ideally they should bring you as close to a test pipe as possible...

If I ran a test pipe, I'd have to make sure I was getting a clean burn, or else I'd risk my exhaust getting pretty smelly.

man the ultimate racing cats and test pipes to me are the best in the biz. Even at the lowlow price, they can be trusted and will exceed or perform with any of them. Give them a try, like adam said they are warrantied also. You cant go wrong with UR and Daryl's customer service.

Even if you get a high flow cat, always keep your stocker for emissions testing! The "universal" high flow cats were not designed to be used on turbo cars. They do not have the same quality as the OE units and will burn out a lot faster.

I have the Random Tech hiflo and it spools quicker 2.6-2.7k instead of 3k rpm.It actually makes the car easier to drive.

I've been waiting for a high flow cat test but have only seen them in Japan so far. I fail to see why a good high flow cat wouldn't pass emissions and be setup for turbo cars. It would be nice to see a test on the dyno of each one + a sniff test for them also on the same car.

I had 2.5" catco from Buschur on my Eclipse. Good piece, noticable performance gain and passed emission everytime. I think it was pretty cheap, maybe under 200 or so - but it was over 3 years ago.

That's a pretty significant difference. How does everyone else's spool up compare to this?
