Help! Cam install, timing belt slipped

i was doing the hks 272's and the cam gears, well, everything went well until the belt slipped and came off of the gear. so i panic and put everything back to stock to see if i can trouble shoot. well the markings lined up to the gear and tdc on the valve cover but cant will not start. when i crank it up the car doesnt turn over or when it does it dies shortly, i can keep it alive if i gas it but it sounds like crap.
i was wondering if you guys can help me with the timing. its my daily driver so i have to "borrow" a car tomorrow. dont know if i can borrow any more days. thanks in advance.

You're very lucky you didn't bend any valves (or maybe you did). Never try to crank the car unless you are positive the timingbelt is lined up properly or you'll be very sorry.

Did you tension the timing belt per the shop manual's spec?

Did you crank the engine by hand two complete revolutions (one complete cycle) and did the timing marks line up after doing that? If the timing belt is tight (under tension) and everything lines up after hand-cranking the engine around for a complete cycle, then I would imagine that the cams are timed correctly.

On the other hand, if the timing belt or cams don't turn properly when you hand crank the engine, or if the timing marks don't line up, you probably need to do a complete timing belt replacement procedure -- and if you've tried cranking the engine with an improperly installed timing belt, there is a decent chance you might have damaged the belt. Might as well have a replacement belt handy in case you pull the belt and find any damage.

Note that when I attempted to start my car after replacing my camshafts, I had a similar problem where the engine wouldn't start. It would crank but just wouldn't run on its own. In my case it turned out to be a loose electrical connection to the cam angle sensor.

I would suggest that you check the timing again, and also check all of your electrical and vacuum connections (at least those that you disconnected while working on the car). If you don't find anything, and if you're convinced that the timing is correct, you're down to basic troubleshooting of a dead engine. If you're lucky, you'll be able to read a trouble code through the OBD-II port. If you've got a cammed motor, buy an OBD-II reader if you don't already have one. If no code is available, find out which of the three basics is missing (air, fuel, or spark) and go from there...

i did mine last night and one cam was off by 1 tooth. this is how i fix mine. line up dtc on the crank. put the valve cover back on to check your cam timing. if only one cam is off, loosen that cam. mark the timing belt where its suppose to be with a marker. loosen tension, be sure to have your other gear zip tied to the belt.remove bolt to cam. turn the gear to your mark on the belt. zip tie. then use wrench to turn your cams to line up with the gear. be sure to watch your crank mark. if it moves move it back to tdc. good luck .

Always crank your engine by hand before using the starter!

You'll know if your having head issues. If your cars running fine then its fine.

Also get the timing belt all lined then crank it by hand to make sure the valves aren't hitting the pistons. Then reset your ecu. I just did cams and cam gear and the car was running like *** at idle before I reset the ecu.
