Think I threw a Rod please help
Think I threw a Rod please help
My evo only has 2500 miles on it and is a month old. I just had a GReddy Ti exhaust, Apexi downpipe and a GReddy profect B spec 2 put on yesterday. 4 hours later my service engine soon light came on and I started gettin really bad noises comin from the engine. it was like a mix of a grinding and a knocking at anything over 1000 rpm. I think I might have thrown a rod but my boost gauge never registed me having pushed over 16 psi. maybe it is not reading properly and I was making far more boost than I realized . Does anyone else have any idea what else this could be and if it is a thrown rod how long and how much will it cost to fix. I know I'm gonna get my warrenty voided cause of the boost controler so any advice would be much needed.
If you don't have oil, that's a prob.. that means there's a hole... were you beating on the car for those 4 hours straight??? if not, maybe it's just coincidence something bad happened, or you should start pointing fingers at that shop that installed your stuff... if it's anything severe, take that stuff off, then take it to a dealer, it's worth a shot that they may just fix it...

is there any reason that it would have blown at only 16 or 17 psi though? its factory rated at 19 so either my gauge is giving me a wrong reading or is it possible to blow the stock internals at that low of a boost level?
sound to me like you may have spun a bearing. My friend threw a rod on his 300zxtt and it's definatly alot more noise then what you discribed. it had a nice little hole in the side of the block. oil went everywhere and all over the car and out of the exhaust. he was just cruzing on the intrestate when it happened. to check and see if you spun a bearing. if the car will start. start it and pull the plug wire off of the #1 cylinder and if the sound stays the same the check the next. if you pull one and the knocking gets quiter. then you know a basic area of the problem. but before you started check the oil like everyone said. then undo the drain plug and drain some of the oil out and check for metal shavings. if you have a magnet to drain the oil onto it will catch the shavings. if you see shavings in the oil theres no reason to try my first step. if you don't see any shavings then you can try it and see if theres any knock coming from a spun rod or crackshaft bearing. hope this help.
edit: good chance your gonna need to put all the factory stuff back on. good luck

ok everyone thanxs for the advice................theres no way I can get the factory exaust back on cause it's gone.........but how do I remove the boost controller ? I I just hide it and hope they don't see it or are there lines I'm gonna have to try and get out. Please know that my car is currently stuck in a stop an shop parking lot cause I'm too afraid of causeing more damage if I try and get it home........it will start and run but the noise gets bad over 1000 rpm. if I'm gonna take out the controller is there an easy way to do it? thanxs
Don't worry too much about the exhaust, but take out your boost controller and put the stock vacuum lines back in..
LIke everyone said, check your oil.. Look under the car for obvious oil everywhere.. also check your coolant since if you did something really bad, you'd could have white smoke pouring out..
Sounds like you spun a bearing or overboosted and damaged a piston or the head.. at 16psi of boost, either the reading was way off, or there's something else going on. You won't know till you have it checked out.

There is no way that any of the stuff that was put on is the problem, unless you were boosting way too high. In fact, I can't even think of how you could possible hook any of it up wrong that would cause any problems if you were only hitting 16 or 17 psi. The parts and install aren't the problem. Sounds like a legit warranty claim, unless you or a mechanic drained the oil and forgot to put more in.
I know that a couple guys have had their oil pumps fail and the motor go before they ever got to 10000 miles man so it could be a simple malfunction like that and your motors finished.Hope its something like that man!

Take it back? Back where? People like you screw everyone up. He did this to his car he is responsible NOT MITSU. God I have no idea how people like you live. First do a Compression test. Second your stock turbo cant boost over 28 psi no matter what so it not likely the you could blow your engine. 4g63 can handle 32 psi stock proven. We have no idea what you did but as I said above have a compression check.
This may seem like a silly question, but are you sure it's the engine ???
Check you new exhaust. It just may be rattling around under there. Check to make sure they put
your cat back on flat side up. If not, the cat will rattle and scrape against the heat shields.
Also, you got the 3" DP, but when they put the bars back on they may not have used spacers and the DP
could be banging around, especially when you give it gas.
But if you have sensed a loss of power, then you may have some internal problem.
