Thumbs up Pennzoil Synchromesh review

It's a bit too early for me to do a review, but I'm happy my shifting is so much better now. I just finished my 15,000 mile maintenance today , which included the tranny fluids and differentials. I read up on all the hype synchromesh was getting so I bought some Pennzoil, which they say is the exact same thing as GM Syncromesh.

I drove it home for 30minutes, so this review is based on just that much driving. When I started up the car, the shifting feel slightly slippery-er (best word to describe it), but mainly felt like stock fluids. After it warmed up, there was a highly noticeable difference. Shifts were much more slippery.

I had to test out the 1-2 shift, since my grinding problems were getting progressively worse. I used to not have this problem. It would even happen on slow high rpm shifting (no, not user error). So I tried shifting really fast on the 1-2 shift at a few stoplights on the way home. Incredible! The notchy shift to 2nd gear was gone when I'd shift fast. It's still slightly there when you shift slow though.

Overall, not bad for $15 worth of fluids at Autozone (3qts).

Jup, I was just about to post mine. I changed over to the penzoil last night and drove about 40 miles today. Much better, and no more 3rd gear grind.

I recommend it

what about transfer case and rear diff? what did you use?

Yes, Pennzoil Synchromesh is transmission fluid. I went with the oem Diaqueen LSD gear oil for the transfer case and rear differential. I had to order that in Nebraska, since no locals had it here. It came in a 4-liter tub, and I barely even used any of that to refill it (maybe a quart).

I am trying to switch to penzoil but the guy said it's to light comparing to 75W90?? How many kinds are there?? I would like to know guy please help.

I have changed mine out 3 times,,,,, twice to bg syncomesh,,,,, it was fine for one day,then its just a ***** to chift now,,,,,,I might try the Penzoil syncromesh myself.cant hurt

Pennzoil synchromesh is SAE 80W.

and I heard it's only one kind so its kinda hard to pick the wrong one right? I was just worried because the guy at auto zone said he thinks its very light comparing it to 75W90 which Mitsu recomand. I am using NEO 75W90 now but I have been told that its the best oil but its very very slipry (not good I guess). Thanks for your help.

Thinner oils will always shift better, but don't do a good job protecting the gears and bearings. Thicker oils don't shift as well, but keep the gears protected.

Mitsu recommends 75W-85 or 75W-90 in the tranny. I would stick to their recommendations. There shouldn't be any short term problems from using thinner oil, but given how finicky our trannies are already, it's probably best not to introduce another variable into the equation. The NEO stuff should be fine though.

After much going back and forth about what oil to use in my tranny, I just decided to stick with the stock stuff. Can't go wrong w/ stock stuff!

NEW UPDATE**************************

Well, I've got 6000 miles on this new fluid. Gear grinding started up again 3000 miles ago, and is getting progressively worse. It only happens in 2nd gear. Do those metal bushings help? Or will I have to see if they'll warranty this at my dealership?

If you had a mechanical problem to start with... the Syncromesh may "mask" the problem making things worse in the long run. I have used it with great success for over 30k. However, other than "notchy shifting" in all gears, I had no real problems with particular gears. I noticed the notchy-ness more in the 1-2 shift, but my issues have only gotten better, not worse from a pre-exisiting mechanical gremlin.
