Question Technical Q! EVO8 AWD Drivetrain

Hi All,

I pulled out the EVO8 manual the other day, and additionally an old EVO 7 Ralliart dog gear conversion installation paper, and tried to figure out where / how / and why the center diff. works in the EVO. What I see so far is this:

Looking at the tranny from driver's side to pass. side, I see a driveshaft going to the driver's wheel, then a diff. unit, then the "transfer case" that sends basically a drive shaft to the back, then another driveshaft to the pass. front wheel. I know that there is a really big gear that bolts a diff. inside the tranny, so ... is THAT the front diff. or center diff?

When people, 'blow' their 'center' diff. is that the bolt on unit that sends power to the back wheels? Is there a diff. inside there?

Last question ... when people opt. for a EVO 5 RS diff. Which diff. are they replacing, the one inside the tranny, or possibly the one inside the bolt on transfer box ... thingy?

Thanks for letting me ramble. Any explanations would be very helpful, and if you want to reference stuff, I've got an EVO8 tech. manual here.

Thanks,

jcnel.

The center Diff is in the Transmission housing. The front diff is inside the transfer case which is the unit attached to the driveshaft sending power to the rear of the car.

Thanks,

So that's why I can assume doing a front diff, is actually pretty 'easy?' At least you don't have to break apart the tranny to do it.

Also ... When somebody 'launches' and breaks a diff. Which one (if both) is it?

Thanks,

jcnel.

The spider gears inside the front diff are what usually break first from wheel hop during hard launches.

And I don't understand why that is....I mean, is Mitsu giving us crappy parts or what? I had a Jeep Wrangler that had 5 inches of suspension lift and 33x12.5 inch Super Swamper Boggers on it, and I NEVER had a problem with the spider gears.....Well, except for the 3 (seperate) times when I snapped the rear axle....

We just need to open up the transfer case, transmission, and rear differential and weld all the spider gears together. If you want to drag race on a budget, this would be the way to do it. Of course, you'll probably never want to drive your car on the street again if you do....

Our cars were not designed for drag racing! Our cars do exactly what they were designed for, cornering well! The cause for most failures is due to the driver not knowing how to properly launch an AWD car. Our front diff just happens to be the weak link in the driveline. That should be remedied once the quaife front LSD comes out.
