Talking digital Boost A/F Ratio gage

Hey all, I just designed, and am in the process of sourcing components for a DIGITAL Boost and air-fuel ratio gage setup.. Here's the cool part, It replaces the factory clock.. It will be either Vacuum Flourescent, or LED Matrix.. My personal design also incorporates an adjustable shift-light using the guts of an autometer product.. Any suggestions for it? Or is anyone interested in it as a product for your EVO or Lancer?

From what I can tell, I can get 3 (SMALL) 3 segment LED, a small bar graph, and several small LED's..

Since I'm working from dimensions off my dash, anyone have a spare vent/clock/hazard bezel from a lancer or evo that I can work with?

I will have a rendering up of it shortly.. still deciding on components and what size digits to use and still be readable.. (it will make a difference on how many segments)

Jack

Make sure it will read hundreths of a volt, or it's not going to be too useful.

Very interested as well. Excellent concept. What a perfect spost to put it.

Let me know ASAP. Hell I'll even invest.

I'm using Nordstok components and a high resolution O2 sensor.. it it will read from 0.00 volts to 1.00 volts, with perfect mixture at 0.50 volts.. at this point trying to figure out what size segments to use...

Heck yeah...boost guage and adjustable shift light integrated in the same component...I definitely would be interested!

Please post a rendering when you can, and let us know your progress.

Thanks!

I'm actually doing some research on using a little microprocessor to do this stuff.. So its possible I can read several different sensors, however the first one is going to be a boost/a-f gage..

I'm also considering modifying a stock autometer A/F Gage, and adding a digital boost (2 segment) indicator in the center where there's dead space.

Any progress so far?

Even if you can just get a Boost Guage in there you'll be busier than a one legged man in a butt kickin' contest!

Thanks...

Yeah, the boost gauge is actually easy to do.. I decided to drop the idea when I started working on another project.. Sorry guys.. The pod on the steering column was alot easier to do, and it didn't obstruct anything on the dash either.. I fabbed up my own setup from autometer, but Bushur performance has the same cup if you want to check it out.

damn, i was actually getting really excited about this.. you say the boost guage is easy to do in the clock area? if you've given up on the idea, care to elaborate on how you were planning on going about it? I have a bit of experience with microelectronics, but absolutely none with reading utomitive codes, or to the xtent of dealing with led encoders for a dispaly and such, myabe you could lead me int he right direction in building one for me.

Nordstock? Or nordskog?

I can tell you right now that Nordskog gauges are not worth the plastic they are housed in. They are so damn flakey.

like this one?

It's a jumptronix digital AF meter. Contact http://roadraceengineering.com for details.

Sorry.. It was Nordskog.. and I was actually only using the sender, for an electronic gauge, you really can't tell all that much of a difference anyway.. Ok.. Yes, you can fairly easily install a gauge in place of the clock.. However I was trying to make it a bolt-in with no modifications.. It would have consisted of a resin (plastic) base with the gauge and circuit board assembled to it. However I could not find anyone who had a dash assembly from a lancer or evolution that I could use to mock-up some of my ideas.. I was alo attempting to create a resin casting of the dash garnish (grey piece that runs from the center pod, to the passenger side) and was going to make a few cups up to mount gauges. I can fabricate almost anything if I can get the parts into my workshop.. LOL

Oh and the hardest part about your own gauge if your creating the microelectronics. is the sender.. You need to get the lambda (Usable) voltage range.. then to calibrate it, if its linear, its just a matter of using a small microcontroller to take the input voltage, and translate it to a boost/vacuum value (regardless I recommend using a microcontroller like a PIC or basicStamp since you can create a simple Analog to digital encoder circuit, then calibrate it programmatically).. If it is a sender where it has a "Dead spot" (where there is a logarithmic change, then levels of) you would need to use a translation table for the v+ ranges...

This circuit with a translation table would also apply to a O2 sensor, and if your creative with buttons and programming, you can actually have several inputs that it can measure and display.

Jack,
Since I read this idea, I've been researching it hard core as I want a boost guage, but dont really want to add a gauge anywhere like the coumn or a pillar, and clock locall would keep it looking stock.

I found a motorola MPX4250 pressure sensor, that will send an analog signal from 0-5V, linearly, and measure 1-30+ PSI accurately. I read of some guy in UK who used this and a PIC16f77 micro-controller to make a boost gauge w/ bar graph.
I am trying to get this to work, but I have absolutely no microcontroller experience, lack the programming hardware, etc. I can definitely find a way to fit the lcd into the spot, even the required PCB/ breadboard/ circuitry, but I need some help with the programming part to get the display working. I'm gonna research more into getting it working, but any help out thre in that field would be greatly appreciated.

PS. if you're concerned about keeping the idea yours for future marketing plans, cool, its yours, i'm not trying to start my own product line, just make a nice custom gauge for myself. hope you dont mind my using your idea.
