Unhappy HKS cam dowel pin hole dim and pin length HELP

Hello all,

I am in the middle of a dispute with an install shop and need information to prove the installation was the cause of my car's malfunction. I am looking for either the drawing of HKS cams showing the dowel hole dim and the dowel pin length or someone with access to cams that could check for me. The problem is the installer ramed the pin in the cam hole and the shop is saying the cam was deffective as the hole should not be so deep as to allow the pin to go in. I am trying to see if the cam is deffective or they did the install wrong. Thank you for the help.

i think they install it wrong. when i was putting my cams in the pin wouldn't go in. i found out you have to rotate the cams and it slides in easily.

I´ll have mine on thursday and can check them for you then...if they forced the dowel in with the cam gear there would be a mark on it.

Jorge

Hey Jorge,

I PM'd you. Please let me know if you have the cams right now and could take some measurements for me or I could come and take some measurements and pictures. Thanks. That would be perfect.

Cam pin sticks out 5.5 mm from the cam.

About 3 1/2 - 4 pennies stack together.

I think the shop rammed it in with an air tool without checking if it was line up with the pin slot in the gear.

there is a very good chance that the shop did ram the pin in.

this is exactly what happened to me when i had my hks cams installed. they didnt notice until they started the car up and it was not idleing correctly.

they pulled the cam out and noticed the pin was only sticking out about 2mm and was not nearly enough to hold the cam gear.

here is the majic: they welded a screw driver to the pin and were able to hammer at the screw driver and get the thing out. then just broke the weld from the screw driver and put the pin back in the other way because it had some weld metal on the end of it and didnt allow the pin to fall too deep into the hole.

i think the hks drills the hole too deep because this should never happen.

Hks Usa

I contacted HKS yesterday to see if they could send me a drawing of the cam end showing the depth of the hole. They were unable to help whatsoever. I was diseapointed that as such a reputable company, they cannot get a drawing for a customer. The guy was not very customer service oriented and said the cams are built just like to stock on so I could check that and if that wasn't enough I could call the distributor I purchased the cams from, return my cam and they would check it. Like that's an easy option. Anyway, noone else is responding to this thread with assistance. It is hard to believe noone out there has cams on order and is willing to take a few pictures and dimensions. In the meantime, my car could be getting worst and I have no recourse with the install shop.

sorry to hear that. iwish i can help you but i installed it a while ago..
take it to a machine shop and they can extract it and and or make a new one from the extracted pin.. thats how mine was done. i dropped it off to a friend and he did it and gave it back the next day. so i am guessing it isn't very hard to do.
btw when i installed it. i used power tools and it wasn't on track so the whole pin was pushed all the way in.
