yeah I saw taht earlier today... it was pretty good although they didn't show enough of the Evo! They had an interview with Shiv which was pretty cool but at least they showed and mentioned the Evo... they left alot of the cars completely out.

All those tuners said that their cars were emissions legal but Car and Driver didn't do a simple sniffer test . My view is....to be a great tuner is to be able to build a car and pass a California emissions test since it seems that we have the strictest of them all. Alot of tuners can build a fast car but can they build both a fast car and a emission legal car? Forget the so called "street legal/daily driven" car. There is a difference between that and a emission legal car. Big props. to shiv and the Vishnu guys. They know their stuff. Man, that Evo has been abused alot and it's still kicking.

The C & D Super Tuner challenge is covered in the current issue of C & D too, and they cover all the cars much more thoroughly.

Being overseas, i won't have access to the new C&D issue for another 10 days or so. Anyone care to post up scans or a brief synopsis of what was said (about us mainly, of course )

The vishnu evo did really well. 475 hp on more or less stock internals is awesome. Fastest 0 to 60 of the day (3.4 sec). Talked about the intercooler hose popping off repeatedly. The evo finished second in the overall sedan class, first was the $120,000 mallett cts-v with 751 hp. The evo beat the mallet in the road course (48.5 seconds to 50.8), beat it in the quarter mile (11.6 @ 120 to 12.4 @ 125), but lost the overall total course time by 0.2 seconds (104.1 seconds to 103.9 seconds). The only bad things they said about it were "...the laggy engine, loud exhaust, and fourth-gear grind netted a worst in class three-star drivability rating;" and "...the car couldn't piece together all these 'bests' in a single run because of a pesky intercooler hose that wouldn't stay attached." They said during its only complete run, the speed readout detached from the windshield, and it caused the driver to fumble around with it, but I'm not sure if that was the road course or total course time.

Anyway, all-in-all it makes me happier to be an evo owner every time I hear about something like this. This was the cheapest car in the line up and the only 4-cylinder, and it did better than a significant portion of the open class (including an Evotech Gallardo).

Oh yeah...
How did you guys (or anyone, for that matter) decide on the HP numbers? Was it just a guess based on whp or did someone actually take the time to do an engine dyno earlier on, or maybe just the flow capabilities of the turbo. I ask specifically because the mallett cts-v claims 751 hp, which seems a little specific if its based on anything but an engine dyno.
Well, just curious.

Yeah.. that's about right. During the first and only clean run that we got, the GPS timing system which as suction cupped onto the windscreen fell off during the road course portion of the test. So Paul/Chronohunter had to reach under the passenger seat to fish it out while still trying to drive the snot out of the car Unfortunately, at the time, we didn't complain to the officials (just the timing people about the suction devices needing more suction) since we expected 4 more, much faster, runs. But a faulty lower IC hose kept that from materializing. If we had told the officials about it at the time it happened, they would have given us another make-up run which, IC hose willing, would have easily been a few seconds faster let. But we didn't, so we didn't get one. Oh well.. .there's always next year

The car was, without a cat, quite loud as many of you guys know. As for the 4th gear grind? Well, One Lap of America does take its toll on mechanicals. I'm surprised that was the only thing that seemed worse for the wear! The EVO is a damn tough car even under the worst conditions (Paul+One Lap=mechanical hell )

The hp estimates were just those, estimates. We were asked how much flywheel hp our car made and we just took a guess on it based upon our dyno numbers. In Shootout trim, our car made approx 380-390whp (on our DD dyno, of course) due to octane limitations (we had to use pump gas). This is where we lost alot of ground to the big boys sporting 7+ liters and turbos/scs. Its very easy for them to make mega power on 93oct gas. Not so easy for us. Especially when reliability and durability is a major focus. Still had fun though!

Hey Shiv, C&D said you guys were running a cusco limited slip front and back. What is the advantage to the rear one over the stock; and how did you make the front one work with the abs system, or did you take it out? I thought you needed an active center diff to get it to work with abs.

The front and rear diffs were replaced because the broke at the cars first day at the drag strip. So we upgraded them to something more robust and better suited to 500+hp the car was capable of running in road racing trim. There were no problems with the ABS system with such a set-up. Although it did take quite a bit of suspension changes to make the car handle the way it does.
