subarus handle poorly because the engine and transmission are positioned so high in the chassis. subaru needs to put them above the front differential to achieve the symmetrical AWD design.

This has been covered elsewhere I'm sure, but its way more then just the tires. To say that two seperate teams of engineers from Mitsu and Subaru developed equally handling cars and then it came down to wrong tire choice by the subaru people is pretty trite. There are way more things going on to make the Evo better.

I had always heard a shorter wheelbase was better then a longer one, to take it to an extreme an Elise handles better then an Excursion. Go karts do better then hearses. Some people have blamed the Evos long wheelbase and transverse engine setup on its poor turning radius. The number one complaint I read from tests is that Subarus tend to push and have soft springs compared to their archirival. It would take more then just a set of tires to solve that.

yeah wheelbases, shock damping and tires make a difference but how bout this reason: the engineers........choosing parts and formulating mathematical equations is the easy part, but manipulating each and putting it together to work in harmony as required for a great car comes down to the designers. Don't you think the Subie engineers could have figured out that its car handled a tad worse because a inch difference in the wheelbase? It's just like racing, you have a formula and you have to maximize your limitations and that goes beyond settings and parts.

I've met many of the engineers who build the Evo and they are extremely talented and passionate individuals. Not to say more so than the Subaru guys, but perhaps they just got it more "right" this round. It's the same reason Porsche drive like Porsche; Ferraris like Ferraris and why other cars at in that class can't do what they do and drive like they drive.

Well, all I know is that the STi does push, and believe me it does haha. The evo just felt, better, I can't really describe it.
