Laser jammer saved my bacon!

In March of last year I had an Escort ZR3 laser shifter installed on my Evo. It has gone off several times, but I never felt as if it really saved me -- until tonight.

I was driving on a 2 lane separated highway. It was about 9pm and I had just stopped at a traffic light. The road ahead was clear, so like any good Evo owner would do when you get a green light and a clear road… I stepped on it. I worked through redline up through 3rd and then continued in 4th, backed off and dropped to 5th. At this point I was probably doing about 100mph and coasting back down to the speed limit. This is where both my Valentine and my laser jammer started going crazy! I immediately nailed the brakes, quickly bringing my speed down to about 45. I then reached down and disabled the jammer to allow for the cop, which I couldn't see, to get a reading on me. My jammer was now silent, as it was disabled, but my Valentine was still making a racket. As I drove on a little ways, I finally made out a black unmarked police car in the center median. All of his lights were off and it wasn’t until I was within 100yds that I could clearly make him out. All I could clearly see was the red lighting from the laser gun.

When I finally came close enough to make him out clearly, I was then able to also see the 2nd officer parked next to him, ready to bust speeders. At this point I had all my fingers crossed, hoping that my jammer had worked.... and sure enough neither cop pulled out or even turned their lights on. PHEW!!!

I can just imagine the cop salivating as I came up on him, hoping for a big ticket. I can only imagine his frustration as he was unable to get a read on me until I was again doing the limit.

I then drove the rest of the way home at the speed limit.

Note to all about where I was speeding:
This piece of road has great visibility and and at this time, no traffic. It was completely safe. This is a road that I drive every day and am intimately familiar with.

Nice!

Good thinking about turning it off and let him get a reading when you slowed down.

Gotta be careful, radar guns will get you from far away! All they need to see is headlights coming.

Some don't and some do. I researched this thoroughly before buying. The Escort ZR3 does work. All of the reviews I read were excellent. I can now vouch for its effectiveness.

This is one of the ZR3's features. There is a conveniently mounted disable switch for this purpose.

If he had been using "instant on" radar then I would have been toast. I was lucky he was using laser!

That is a pic of the rear jammer, mounted above the plate.

The price ranges between $300 and $400. They are hard to find these days as I don't belive Escort, for whatever reason, makes them anymore. When I bought mine, Escort was still advertising them on thier site. I can't find it now???

I did a quick Ebay search:

hmm interesting. I always wonder if things like this actually work or not. It's hard to test them- unless you have a cop friend lol. Sounds like it worked for you- or they for some other reason didn't get a reading on you until you slowed down. Maybe they dropped a donut and were looking for it.

Are the jammers illegal in certain states?

Light emissions are controlled by a different agency than radar. Still legal.... right now , at least in CO. Not sure about other states.

Maybe they felt sorry for me because it was going to be a bad ticket???
