Replaced STi with MR
Replaced STi with MR
I totaled my STi a week ago--got t-boned turning left onto a highway. I'd had it a year, put 25k miles on it, and won the regional A-Stock championship in my first full season of autocrossing (against rather light competition, I must say). I really liked the STi, Subaru, and my dealer, and I'm not at all interested in dissing them. As an STi owner, I always respected and appreciated Evos.
At first I figured I'd replace the STI with another. Then I started thinking about other options. In the end, the avalanche of praise the automotive press has had for the Evo and the recommendation of an '03 Evo-owning friend convinced me to give the Evo a shot. A local dealer had a gray MR, and I was able to get it for $500 over invoice.
I miss the STi's low-end grunt and flatter power band, and I miss climate control and cruise control (only a little). The Evo's crisper handling and steering, tighter feel, seats, gauges, and JATO-like boost (which I'm only getting a hint of during break-in) make up for it, though. Only time will tell how it really stacks up to the STi, though.

Get that synthetic oil OUT of the motor for break in and drive it like you stole it. I just took apart an Evo 4G63 that had 20K miles on it. The evidence of oil blow by the rings was really obvious. That motor along with the poor compression on my own motor convinced me that synthetic oil is bad to use while breaking in an engine.
Aside from that, enjoy the ride and welcome to the club!

I never busted 3K when I was breaking in mine. It was agonizing not touching boost for 1500 miles! But about the oil, mine makes perfect compression with no blow by, and I've only used the Mobil 1 FS, so I dunno. I would suspect rings before oil honestly.
