Carbon Carbon - the next racing material?

Any that are the TLC/Discovery channel watchers have seen the articles about the hyper-sonic ramjet. Its nose is made out of carbon-carbon; it's supposed to withstand the forces and temps of hyper-sonic travel, meaning lots of stresses and temps in excess of 2,000 degrees.

So how come I haven't seen this stuff in (at least) racing? I figured F1 would have adopted this material already. Perhaps it's already in use and I don't know it?

Someone that knows please speak up!

Virtually all racing series are notorious for suppressing new technologies to keep everything "fair and even" dispite budget differences.

However, it is possible it's out there being used/tested and just not being talked about. Dont forget patents can play a role in how a new technology is released.

the compressed carbon tech's been around since 70's... nothing new, but the manufacturing technology is increasingly proficient and becoming less expensive.

So that's why we could obtain some of that f-1 racing technology.

If you so desire, given that you have a lot of money rolling around, then you could actually get carbon carbon brakes, rotors, and various engine components and interior replacement pieces.

Dude, that stuff has to be sooooooo expensive. It looks bad *** though. The stuff I saw was almost black looking but you could still see the pattern in it. I wonder how much a carbon carbon hood would go for?

I think it will be the wise investment for high hp EVO's. There is more expensive Carbon-Carbon clutches that can be available but it will be twice as much as ours. So I think our clutch has a upside of the price.

Carbon-carbon is used a lot in F1, space systems and weapons but it's only useful in certain areas. A hood would not be the place to use it because of both weight and cost. I can't imagine it weighing less than our aluminum hood.

For example, only the leading edges of the shuttle orbiter's wings and chines use the carbon carbon. It would be too heavy and extremely cost prohibitive to coat the underside of it with CC. So they use the silica tiles instead.

Amazing material, but like any other material, it's not useful in every application.
