When I went into the Mitsu dealership to haggle my Evo, they let me test drive a rally red w/ only 8 miles on it. I bought an Eclipse there a year earlier and got to know the owner pretty well. I don't know if it had anything to do with it, but I was really surprised when they said I could take it out for a spin.

There is no reason why a clutch wouldn't last 50k + if it was driven normally.
Abuse is the only reason it goes @ 5, 10k.
Mine is 38k and still strong. My 95 gsx had 120k on the factory clutch. Granted it was a bit soft, but still drove the car w/o a problem

So you don't think it's possible for clutches to have manufacturing defects or design flaws? And you don't think a defective flywheel could prematurely wear a clutch?

Granted, abuse is much more likely, but it's not so likely that it's the only possibility.

"salesguy even gave us the number of the 40'ish Doctor whom owned it previously, so I doubt it was abused by him. Oh well, I guess someone will get an Evo with a brand new"

I wouldn't count on that. My dads a 60 year old doctor and he's notorious for being hard on clutches. He's busted BMW, Audi , Porsche, and now his new STI's. I think he feels he's always driving in a formula one race. All cars were only street driven except for the 911 RS which he broke at Texas World Speedway. But this further shows the incopetence of the Mitsu mechanics and most of the dealership staff.

3) the guy got bored with it and traded it in for the next biggest thing, see #1

Evos are good reliable cars if their maintained well, even if their modified. The problem is the folks who really take good care of their stock or modified cars, aren't likely selling them after a year or two. Obviously there are exceptions so don't flame me if you are the exception.

I'd be real hesitant to buy a used evo from MOST of the folks on this site.. Not that you all aren't good people, but I do know the type of stuff that goes on.. a "Stock" evo is rarely stock before it was traded in. And it takes a pretty good eye to be able to tell if the person has done a good job returning it to stock.

Also, for as much as we like to think that a majority of us are older more responsible individuals, this car actually is a majorly younger person's car.. And most owners are male and likely 25 or under, the WORST demographic to buy a used car from.

Then you hear all the "Mitsu sucks, my clutch is toast after 3000 miles, or my transmission or transfer case broke" Well, a vast majority of these cars clutches and drivetrains will last WAY over 25k miles.. If it doesn't last that long, and its not an obvious defect, then its the driver.. Period.. Anyone who thinks otherwise is just kidding themselves. Again, there's always exceptions due to defective components, but most people I've ridden with who drive manual transmission cars really don't know how to drive them correctly anyway. (Oh the countless "Holding steady on a slight incline" drivers I've ridden with..)

I don't mean to sound judgemental and critical, but its something to be aware of.

With the person who the dealer gave out the previous owners phone number, the guy made the deal to get rid of the car.. I'm sure he'd be irked to get called after unloading it. Odds are he withheld information about the car when he traded it in, which would likely have affected his ability to trade the car into the dealer.

With that said, Its LIKELY the car was abused at the dealership by everyone who knew anything about what kind of car it is..

My best recommendation is if you want an Evo, either get it new.. If not, buy it privately if possible, get the VIN # of the car and call the dealer to see if its on a "Restricted" warranty list and also all the warranty repairs that it has been in for. Also, bring someone who is an enthusiast and KNOWS cars, and specifically KNOWS evos.. Anyone who owns one of these and works on them knows what they look like stock and can easily see whats been modified or altered and returned to stock.
Right on, couldn't of said it any better. If ur getting one , get it new cuz chances are its probably been abused.

Not trying to flame but an Evo is an racing enthusiasts type of car. But hey girls can be one too, its just usually rare and u said she already has a car and cant really drive stick.

Okay Malibu, I agree with you but I have to ask about the last line (holding steady on a slight incline). I like to think I know how to drive a manual, but can't figure out what you're getting at on that one. Heck, maybe I'm being abusive and don't know it! Enlighten me please.

EDIT - Wait a sec. Do you mean slipping the clutch while waiting at a light on an incline? If so, I see what you mean!

I just got to call BS on this one. You've got to look at each car and driver on it's (their) own merit. I'm 52 years old and take fanatical care of my car. There is one other Evo in my small town which is owned by a 25ish dude and the first night he had the car he was cutting smoke donuts in a parking lot. Geez, within two months of ownership he could'nt figure out why he was having problems with his clutch. Complained constantly to the dealership.

I've modded my car since about six months of ownership, and am continueing to do so. By the end of February I'll have about 450awhp on pump. I'm currently on the stock clutch, but will changing that shortly due to HP and TQ increase not because I abused my car.

All I'm trying to say is that each person is different regardless of age. Blanket statements are a form of bigotry.

doesn't meant cuz he is old he doesn't go krazy on it

they have the money to buy the car and trash it during weekend and then

trade it when its time to repair. I actually think if you buy a car thats owned by a guy age around mid 20's to 30's would be the best bit cuz they buy the car cuz the love it not just for fun.

Small update. They called me back saying it actually wasnt the clutch, it was the pressure plate. Geniouses I tell ya. lol

I dont think we'll go back and drive the car since we arent interested in it. They said they'd knock off $1k, but I found it its been at that dealership for awhile, so its been a hard sale obviously.

An my gf is not the typical airhead female when it comes to cars. She likes to drag race, and I am slowly getting her into open tracking. It would def see some time at the local road course. She just hasnt driven a manual in a couple years, so she was a bit rusty. Her first car was a 86 Lynx with a 4 speed manual, so yeah she grew up driving manuals.

Don't go back to that dealer. Didn't they even inspect the car?

The higher gears are the first to go with a slipping clutch FYI
