I don't know about anyone else, but I think the Sti is about as ugly as a steaming pile . I understand that is a performance savvy vehicle, but, if I had to look at it every day I think I would die. Now, that isn't to say that the US EVO is much better looking, but the potential is there(i.e. Ver 7 front end swap). I like to enjoy the looks of my car as much as I like the performance aspects of it. With a little time and thought, the US EVO will be just as roadworthy and ten times sexier than that freak of nature SUBARU is bringing.
I am in no way a SUBARU hater, I am a previous Impreza 2.5 RS driver. I loved my car, because it drove well AND looked great.

FWIW,
I'm sticking with the EVO,

They are just so damn close. Yeah the STI has a little extra power, but not enough to make it a EVO trasher. If two cars are within 30hp of each other then the good driver mod is the determining factor in which car will outperform the other.

Good driving will always make the most difference.

So it really is about esthetics and price.

The STI has no radio stock and costs a few thousand more. It also has a little more power, and the 6 speed tranny.

The EVO has a nice stereo and looks like it will be a little more comfy (my impression). It also has a superior intercooler system and a nicer turbo. The EVO has slightly wider tires, and if it holds true to history will more than likely handle a little better. Finally if you take the $2000 or so you will save with the EVO and buy performance parts, you will surpass the performance #'s of the STI by a long shot.

To me the EVO is prettier, but that's personal taste. That's really the bottom line here though. These are both amazing machines. Somebody put in the wrench time. heh heh...

So pick the one you just like better, because you do. Either way you are sure to have a great car that will thrill you every time you get in....

Like I've said all along, these cars are at two different levels. It's not the power that sets them apart like everyone keeps saying, it's the drivetrain. 6spd/DCCD/front & rear non viscous lsd's are FAR superior to a center and rear viscous setup. That's what the current WRX has, the EVO is no better. In the past yes the EVO has out handled the STI, however in the past the EVO had ACD/AYC and the STI just had viscous/mechanical diffs. Now it's the other way around and on top of that the new generation lancer is a boat in comparison to the size of the older generations. Why do you think Mitsu is dropping the Lancer as it's rally platform, to big. Always getting beat by the Impreza, which in turn is always getting beat by the tiny pugs. Anyway, flame me if you like, no skin off my back. Nothing I've said is false though.

The EVO's a great car at its price. The STI is going to be more expensive and the extra gadgets that money buys puts it on a higher level.

3 inchs of bumper makes the evo a boat, ummmmmm ok

you talk like the evo is a 70's caddy with 10ft of hood

I said it's a boat compared to the previous EVO's(pre VII). It's 7.2 inches longer than the EVO VI, the last good EVO IMO. It might as well be a caddy the way it's been running in WRC since the 7 came out.

What's your definition of "faster"?
In terms of straight-line acceleration, the WRX is only faster than the Boxster S up to 60mph. After that, the AWD is a hindrance and the Porsche will catch up and pass the Subaru on its way to a higher top speed.
Since you read Road and Track and you seem to like "magazine racing", look at the performance specs here.

Well.....

I am going to wait. Both cars are going to be great.

Advantages we know.....

STi.....

1. DCCD and it's manually adjustable. Up to 65% torque to the rear. Compareable to the ACD in the JDM Evo that now eliminates the understeer issue. (One of my main issues with the WRX STi)

2. New styling (Better than the old to me.)

3. Upped the ante on the liters in the engine to 2.5

4. Interior looks nice. (Once again personal taste [See #2 STi advantages]

5. Extra liters will help in HP advantage when going aftermarket.

STi Disadvantages.....

1. Unknown weight.

2. Unknown price.

3. Unknown reliability.

Evo Advantages...

1. Recaros

2. We know the STi won't be priced at the same list as the Evo. Depending on difference the Evo could make up the 30 hp difference with an exaust, intake and MBC. If the STi is 3 grand over the Evo this is doable. (See my car if questioning this due to experience with 2 cars w/ 4G63 engines).

Evo Disadvantages....

1. .5 liters less.

2. No AYC (depends on who's driving)

3. No ACD

--------------------------------------------------------

The deciding factor to me will be performance and reliability. I've had a 95 GSX and i currently have a 93 Talon TSi AWD. I know the potential of the JDM 4G63 pre rotated engine design as i am experiencing it first hand. Different animal? Not completely, for they are in the same design family.

I have seen 600hp Evos and 600hp STis. I want to see a real world comparo of the two stock cars against each other with good drivers. The magazines plus any other comparison info will have to do. I am currently leaning toward the Evo but i still have my eye on the STi. Strongest block, overall strongest drivetrain, build quality and track performer gets my vote. Cheapest to mod will help in this argument.

Even if the Evo is not overall faster than the STi but has lest complaint on the build quality issues/repair problems i will go Evo. If the opposite scenario takes place i will go with the STi. What i save overall cost purchase and repairs will make the faster car for me cause i won't have to d!ck with the headache of build quality.

Just a side note...i already have a fully built Evo with the different front end already picked out.

Ralliart...you better offer some bad@$$ options/upgrades!

1. Larger brakes on the Evo than the STi. 14 inchers compared to the 12.5 inchers i've read on. Brembos are a given on both.
WRONG!!!
Evo has smaller brakes.

EVO STi
Front - 12.6'' 12.7''
Rear - 11.8'' 12.3''

2. Recaros

Well, the cheapest Recaros vs. Prodrive seats in STi? I'd say it's a close call and rather a question of personal preference.

I would like to add:

EVO
4. wider tires. STi can only use 225 max.

STi
6. Front SureTrac differential.

Right. I see a lot of test drives on EVOs.
I do not think you would be able to test drive any EVO for some time cause they will be sold even before car gets to a dealership. And driving around dealership without killing not broke-in car and get an idea about it's track performance is rather not possible.

People will be convinced by the excellent knowledge, vast driving experience, helpfulness, and unbiased viewpoint of the car dealer's salesperson.

On the brakes i was fed misinformation....i will edit it.

After i posted i read up and saw.

I like the interior of STi more and stated that. It is an advantage of the Evo none the less. BTW...no offense, try decaf (bustin *****) . Thanks for the correction though.

From Claudius
Why do you want AYC? Dont you like drifting?

Yes, but i also like winning in the turns as well. Drifting is fun yes but like to race .....ALOT. I tend to go as fast as i can push it when i can. Am i nuts? Possibly, thus why i have a love of AWD and twisties.

No AYC to me is a plus and a minus. I can live without it and am not overly critical about it. Just a disadvange of what is offered for the JDM market.

Dont base a car purchase decision on magazine articles. Go test drive the cars.
Notice i said and "any other info i can get". I was implying videos, web vids and testdrives (should have clarified). Personal experience or whatever i could get my hands on. I can bet i have more vids of the Evo most have comebined of any other cars. (I have about 7 gig btw on my laptop. It isn't driving experience but look at where i'm at.) Not into magazine/hypothetical racing thus why my decision is still open.

Test drives are not something that i have had the opportunity to get. Limited production car test drives of these vehicles for me here won't happen unless i get a mad hook up. Just reality man. When the WRX was about 3-4 months old i still could not get one.
