After reading the review of the new STi on http://www.apexjapan.com that Rafal previously posted, I think it's safe to say that the new car handles pretty sweetly indeed. It's a very enthusiastic review! And after hearing the awesome comments about the 2.0 liter unit, can you imagine how awesome the torquey 2.5L is going to be!?! This new STi is looking better and better. I want to see more reviews of both cars. This is getting exciting.

ps. but the S401 was a sweet, sweet ride. My number 1 choice for an 800 mile day of driving of which at least half is mountain/coastal roads.

The Neon SRT4 would've blown them all away!!

Hey Paul, does looking out throught the windshield at the STI's massive hoodscoop get annoying after a while? Thanks.

No, not in the least. The hoods actually pretty low from at least my POV (6ft, not too tall torso), so there wasn't that much hoodscoop in my view. It's actually necessary, I believe - the way the aerodynamics work now, they need that extra bit at the top to be in the airstream at speed. "At speed" seems to be 80+mph, as far as I can tell. I've heard statements that the previous STi hoodscoops didn't work too well at 120+mph speeds. It was the main advantage of the Legacy aerodynamics and scoop vs. the STi, better cooling and top end up there.

I've always told STi that the Legacy was actually better suited for track racing than the WRX, but they've got a real soft spot for the WRX and have a hard time shifting their focus.

Cheers,

Paul Hansen

Thanks for the info.
I like the Legacy air intake best. Hopefully, we will get the B4
The new STi's hoodscope is a bit too much

I'm in line for the STi here in June or so.
Which color looks best do you think? I like Blue and white.
Thanks

If you want a business opportunity, you should set us all up with a reputable used parts place in Japan! Then we can all get parts like the good seats cheap from wrecked cars.

Nah, my basic business plan at the moment goes along the lines of "become internationally famous automotive reporter" which would then segue into "lazy used-to-be-famous automotive reporter turned senior editor working at home in the U.S. again finally".

Paul "I'm not really joking on that one" Hansen

. . . I'm really, really just hoping that there are still cars as I know them to drive by the time I get back. . .

Pretty safe to say that both the EVO and STI are close in the handling dept.

Extreme and Zero fighter are not available in Japan. Neither is the prodrive PPP for the STi, for that matter. Neither was the Evo 8 at the time of the test.

It was just a test of the new STi facelift vs the Bugeye models and the Evo VII models, with the S401 thrown in for good measure because STi has 4 S401's that they have to put in the crusher eventually. (seriously, because they aren't properly legal road cars. I told them to give me one, I'd take care of "disposing" it)

Expect to see a future test of the Evo 8 JDM vs. the Evo 8 USDM vs. the facelift STi. And perhaps the RX-8, which may be available at that time.

Cheers,

Paul Hansen

That should prove rather fun and interesting. I still love the RX-8. I'd buy that car too if I could buy two right now.

Not true. The Euro and The JDM 6MT's are totally different gearing.

The JDM(The one that I have) is VERY SHORT 1-5, and a 6 that is slightly longer (105KMH @3000 RPM). It is a very precise and I personally love it. I also like it because it is a transmission, and not a transaxle.

The STi are stock too, what are you talking about!
If you are talking about the EVO extreme, then they will bring out the STi S202 too.

I would seriously consider the Sti but that price jump to nearly 35k will probably be just out of my range at this point. So for now its all Evo. I like the car better anyway except for the tranny and maybe the 2.5l.
